More on Peru’s former guerrilla leader Guzmán

“The advocacy of Betrayal”

El Diario International, a Peruvian journal has joined in condemning Abimael Guzmán as a sell out to the armed struggle of the Communist Party of Peru (a Google translation which also retains some Spanish):

“Dr. Alfredo Crespo, a lawyer for Abimael Guzmán, in defense of this publication has said that the content of this book reaffirms the approach of his client regarding a proposed peace accord that Guzman made in 1993, and an "amnesty general for all who participated in the internal war "in other words means forgiveness and freedom for war criminals, including more than 200 general, paramilitaries, including Alberto Fujimori and Vladimiro Montesinos. Crespo ha dicho también, que Gonzalo, ha dado por terminado el “proceso histórico de la lucha armada”, y que ha pedido a sus seguidores, participar en las elecciones generales, y que para ello tienen que buscar sus propios candidatos electorales. Crespo has also said that Gonzalo has been terminated "historical process of armed struggle" and called on his followers to participate in general elections, and that it must seek its own election candidates. Alfredo Crespo's lawyer, said that his client rejected the guerrilla group that continues to act in the valley of the Apurimac and Ene river located in the high forest consists of three departments of Ayacucho, Cuzco and Junin, in the eastern provinces of Huanta and the Sea Some of the content of this book is a letter of repentance to cure Bambaren Guzman, where he promises that "plans to devote the rest of his life fighting for the freedom of his followers prisoners."

CORRUPTED SYSTEM APOLOGIA

Gonzalo's book objectively serves the interests of government and especially the armed forces. So why does the government represses this book?. The main reason for the government and the political classes are afraid of the word of Gonzalo, has to do with the purpose of erasing the country's historical memory, two decades of civil war. Delete especially the concepts of popular war, revolutionary violence and armed struggle to destroy the State and settle the operating system. Gonzalo, no doubt, is actually a renegade of the revolution, and any of their actions serve the power groups and the government. Their behavior has nothing to do with class struggle or the struggle for socialism. But you can not forget that this same Gonzalo, now with 75 years of hard and pitiful figure was from 1980 until the early 90s, the head of the People's War in Peru, which apart from their mistakes, ideological deviations policies, and conduct anti-Marxist, came to mobilize thousands of peasants and workers under the banner of the struggle for socialism and communism.

Perhaps even more damning is:

“Past experience (historical memory) must be revived, updated in the minds of millions of Peruvians, and this should serve for the next fight for state political power, not committed serious mistakes or fall into ideological messianism as the counter Abimael Guzmán who applied during his reign in Sendero Luminoso.

The struggle for power in Peru, requires a political organization, not personalized, but rather revolutionary, free from personalities stupid and reactionary. The people do not need saviors or "revolutionary fathers" as Gonzalo sold for a mess of pottage.”

The Army of God’s COWARDS

The Rev. Donald Spitz is the main name listed on a sight by the Army of God. This site is dedicated to making heroes of doctor killers, such as Rev. Donald Spitz, Rev. Donald Spitz, even the murderous Rev. Donald Spitz, perhaps the most murderous of all, since he bombed a clinic that killed a security guard and has killed gays and other innocent people.

All this is done in the name of Jesus, their lord, god and savoir.

They also condemn birth control and the United Way. They include the writings of the Rev. Michael Bray.

The most interesting thing about Bray and Spittz is they are typical of the coward who put this site together. Those two don’t sit in a jail cell waiting to be tried for murder, with the chance of never seeing the outside again. They wait until some dupe does their dirty work for them and then they idolize them, even though they can do nothing to really help them. They are like a Monty Python skit from The Life of Brian, where they write resolution condemning the execution of Brian, but refusing to life a finger to actually help him.

These are true paper tigers. The web site is impressive, but put together by comfortable cowards who will never do what they promote for other—other who are stupid enough to put their lives on the line for these cowards.

The Cowardly Rev. Bray

Democracy in India?

From Democracy Now:

Author Arundhati Roy on the Human Costs of India’s Economic Growth, the View of Obama from New Delhi, and Escalating US Attacks in Af-Pak

We’re joined from the Indian capital of New Delhi by the Booker Prize-winning novelist, political essayist and global justice activist Arundhati Roy. Her books include the Booker Prize-winning novel The God of Small Things and her latest essay collection, Field Notes on Democracy: Listening to Grasshoppers. We speak to Roy about India’s conflict with Maoist rebels, the occupation of Kashmir, ongoing Indian-Pakistani tensions, Obama’s war in “Af-Pak,” and more. [includes rush transcript]

Guest:
Arundhati Roy, world-renowned Indian author and global justice activist. Her first novel, The God of Small Things, won the Booker Prize in 1997. Since then she has written numerous essays on war, climate change and the dangers of free market development in India. Her new book, published today by Haymarket Books, is called Field Notes on Democracy: Listening to Grasshoppers. An adapted introduction to the book is also posted on Tomdispatch.com._
AMY GOODMAN: We turn to a woman the New York Times calls India’s most impassioned critic of globalization and American influence, Arundhati Roy, world-renowned Indian author and global justice activist. Her first novel, The God of Small Things, won the Booker Prize in 1997. She has a new book; it’s called Field Notes on Democracy: Listening to Grasshoppers. An adapted introduction to the book is posted at tomdispatch.com, called “What Have We Done to Democracy?” Arundhati Roy joins us now from New Delhi, India, on the country’s biggest national holiday of the year.
Arundhati, we welcome you to Democracy Now! And as you listen to this report from the streets of G-20 by our producer Steve Martinez, talk about globalization and what has happened to democracy.
ARUNDHATI ROY: Well, that’s a huge subject, Amy. And I think my book—in my book, I discuss it in some detail in terms of what’s happening to India. But as we know now, because of the way the global economy is linked, countries are not—you know, the political systems in countries are also linked, so democracies are linked to dictatorships and military occupations and so on. We know that. We now that some of the main military occupations in the world today are actually administered by democracies: Palestine, Iraq, Afghanistan, Kashmir.
But what I think is beginning to be very clear now is that we see now that democracy is sort of fused to the free market, or to the idea of the free market. And so, its imagination has been limited to the idea of profit. And democracy, a few years ago, maybe, you know, even twenty-five years ago, was something that, let’s say, a country like America feared, which was why democracies were being toppled all over the place, like in Chile and so on. But now wars are being waged to restore—to place democracy, because democracy serves the free market, and each of the institutions in democracy, like you look at India, you know, whether it’s the Supreme—whether it’s the courts or whether it’s the media or whether it’s all the other institutions of democracy, they’ve been sort of hollowed out, and just their shells have been replaced, and we play out this charade. And it’s much more complicated for people to understand what’s going on, because there’s so much shadow play.
But really we are facing a crisis. And that’s what I ask. You know, is there life after democracy? And what kind of life will it be? Because democracy has been hollowed out and made meaningless. And when I say “democracy,” I’m not talking about the ideal. You know, I’m not saying that countries that live in dictatorships and under military occupation should not fight for democracy, because the early years of democracy are important and heady. And then we see a strange metastasis taking over….

S.M. KRISHNA: As you are aware, we do have serious and continuing concerns about terrorist and extremist groups in Pakistan, which are—which are a national security risk for us and for our people. Foreign Minister Qureshi conveyed to me the seriousness of his government in bringing to book, through their legal process, those responsible for the terrorist outrage in Mumbai ten months ago.

ANJALI KAMAT: Meanwhile, inside India, the focus has shifted to a different adversary. The stage is set for a major domestic military offensive against an armed group that the Indian prime minister has repeatedly called the country’s, quote, “gravest internal security threat.”
Operation Green Hunt will reportedly send between 75,000 and 100,000 troops to areas seen as Maoist strongholds in central and eastern India. In June, India labeled the Naxalite group, the Communist Party of India—Maoist—a terrorist organization, and earlier this month India’s home minister came to the United States to share counterterror strategies.
The Indian government blames the deaths of nearly 600 people this year on Maoist violence and claims that Maoist rebels are active in twenty out of the twenty-eight states in the country. The Indian prime minister Manmohan Singh outlined the threat to a conference of state police chiefs earlier this month.
PRIME MINISTER MANMOHAN SINGH: In many ways, the left-wing extremism poses perhaps the gravest internal security threat our country faces. We have discussed this in the last five years. And I would like to state, frankly, that we have not achieved as much success as we would have liked in containing this menace.

Wichita builds minor improvement for Cowskin creek, created by overdevelopment

The City would not have a problem with flooding if they refuse to let developers build in the flood plains of the Cowskin Creek. But the developers own Wichita and its leaders. No one has more local authority than local developers. So the taxpayers of this city, not the developers will pay for the improvements.
According to The Wichita Eagle:

“WICHITA — A major excavation project dedicated in west Wichita today should reduce flood levels on the Cowskin Creek by about a foot.
That could save an estimated $429,180 in property damage each year along the flood-prone waterway, City Council member Jeff Longwell said.
The project is essentially a shelf dug along the creek near the Maple Street bridge that will hold millions of gallons of overflow water when heavy rains swell the creek beyond its banks.”

More on the G20 Summit

From the World Can’t Wait:

The most blatant show of military and police force left protesters tear-gassed, subject to piercing sound, shot with rubber bullets, and not allowed to assemble, while the population of Pittsburgh was kept off the streets and rounded up along with people there to deliver messages of opposition to the G-20 ministers.
We put a quick letter together which we will deliver on Thursday. Please circulate this link everywhere so that thousands sign on.

Update on the G20 Summit Protests in Pittsburgh

G20 Summit protests

World leaders can expect to get protesters for their G20 Summit’s and they are getting them. After all, this is a case of the head of the richest countries deciding how everyone else is going to live. This is capitalism at its more despicable moments.

From Examinor.com:

"Thousands of extra riot police on hand yesterday in Pittsburgh used tear gas and fired rubber bullets at the crowd of protesters marching near the venue. There was a specific area set up for protestors and when they went beyond that area by a few blocks, the police responded, as seen in the video below. Demonstrations were widely expected, and the last G20 meeting held in April in London was stained with conflict, the BBC reported. The Pittsburgh Police have arrested 84 people so far in the Pittsburgh area…"…

Who is the real Communist Party of Peru?

Their seems to be a hard core split between the old guard of the Communist Party of Peru, called Shining Path in the press, and a new band of rebels claiming to carry on people’s war. It’s been know for some time that a new leader, Victor Quispe Palomino, has led a smaller, but very active faction of guerrillas often referring to them as the Popular Liberation Army.
Meanwhile, Abimael Guzman, known as Chairman Gonzalo, has called for peace talks and open called for an end to the insurgency. He has written a book that has just come out about his life. He has been sentenced to life in prison for the second time in 2006.
The split is deep and puts into question who the peasants of Peru will reguard as the genuine PCP.

According to CBS News:

“A band of 400 rebels headed by Victor Quispe Palomino has killed 39 soldiers since Peru's military launched an offensive into a remote rebel stronghold last year. The rebel death toll is unknown.Quispe Palomino has openly split with Guzman, and his band distributes pamphlets calling Guzman a "traitor." Last week, Guzman longtime lover and second-in-command Elena Iparraguirre issued a letter from prison that calls the active rebels "mercenaries."

With all of this news the question is: what will happen to the Peru People's Movement which has supported both the people’s war and Chairman Gonzalo.
Just recently they published an article called ” MORE AND MORE, WE GRASP CHAIRMAN GONZALO'S SPEECH AS A COMBAT WEAPON!”
They can’t continue to support both sides. The group will soon have to decide who the real PCP is and which side they will support. The split is too deep for them to continue to support both.

Plan Colombia/ Plan South American empire

The US has used Colombia as a bulkhead of imperialism for the entire southern hemisphere. The idea is that if Plan Colombia is successful, then it could or can be expanded to other parts of South America. The main guerrilla activity outside of Colombia is in Peru. Although the Communist Party of Peru (Sendero Luminoso in the press) is much smaller, it has been active throughout the last few years. Unless President Barack Obama actually pulls the plug on Plan Colombia, we can be assured that it will be expanded at some point.
It is also not beyond belief that the US will use outright military might to subdue such countries as Venezuela, where the US has lost a lot of influence. That doesn’t seem to be as high a priority with the Obama regime, but he will only last eight years and after that the US could have another George Bush or even some one worse.
Here is an organization that deals with event s in Colombia:

COLOMBIA The International Action Center Committee to Stop the U.S. War in Colombia

This is from The Peru People's Movement, June 2009:

GENOCIDE TAKE PLACE DOWN TO IMPLEMENT THE TREATY DE LIBRE COMERCIO DEL IMPERIALISMO YANQUI EN LA SELVA! FREE TRADE OF U.S. IMPERIALISM IN THE JUNGLE!
Amid the general crisis and last in which imperialism debate, we witness a tough competition and hunting more of sources of raw materials throughout the world by the imperialist monopolies and a more bitter struggle between the imperialist countries oppressed countries , developing the inter-imperialist conflict, preparing the conditions for new division of the world. The hegemonic superpower imperialism only in collusion and contention with the other imperialist countries, unleash their genocidal wars against oppressed countries. But imperialist aggression fuels the national liberation struggle of the peoples of the oppressed nations against imperialism, with people's wars and armed struggles that are driving the development of new crecciente great wave of world revolution. In Latin America and Peru, U.S. imperialism develops its hegemonic and counter plan through its Free Trade Agreements (FTA) with which he wants to ensure a comprehensive manner the success of their monopolies against all contingencies in the struggle with the monopolies by other imperialist powers, and its contra war "low intensity" to crush the uprising and resistance of peoples against their rule, as that develops against the people's war in Peru, and against the peoples in Colombia, Mexico etc.. In Peru, in February this year NAFTA took effect, after the government fascist, genocidal and treacherous Garcia, violating its own legal order, issued a series of laws to implement it, subject the country to all the dictates of imperialism Yankee particularly affecting populations der the Peruvian Amazon. The masses of the Amazon, as the country, have rejected the surrender of the country further to the imperialist monopolies. For the package of laws of NAFTA, will go to Amazon lands owned by big oil, mining, water, timber, biofuel production, etc.. The masses of the Amazon two months ago have declared a fight to defend their land, their conditions of existence and sovereignty of the country used to be generated a great movement of national resistance against the aggression of U.S. imperialism, as it is popular mainly pushing for war.

What is US culture? What do we do with it after a revolution?

The US is no different than any other country in that we need a national identity. As Marxists we already know that our founding fathers were racist slave owners who disrespected the indigenous people and referred to them as “savages.”

We know that our standard of living depends on a massive military empire that today rivals even the that of the Romans.

We know that money is the root of pop culture and anything that can’t be mass marketed doesn’t really get promoted as US mainstream culture. While the Italians have the Sistine Chapel, the US has McDonalds and the golden arches. Our two most important artists are Norman Rockwell and Andy Warhol. One painted the America we wish we were, the other showed us as we really were.

But we need a national identity and we need culture. We need heroes and examples of individuals who represented progress in our history, not just the shit that passes for American history in present day US history books.

It may seem over nationalistic, but China developed its own flag and over time Mao Zedong decided that it was wrong to just throw away all of China’s past without giving any credit to those Chinese, including emperors and past philosophers, who contributed progressive ideas.

He noticed the Qing Dynasty initiated some public works, and relied on professionals to design things rather than aristocrats. In his earlier writings, such as On New Democracy, he often quoted Joseph Stalin. Yet in his later writings, such as Five Essays On Philosophy, by the 1960s, he quoted Lao Tse and Mencius.

Antonio Gramsci, Italian Communist writer, pointed out in Critical Notes On An Attempt At A Popular Presentation Of Marxism By Bukharin that there are people in the past who contributed progressive ideas to history, yet would not stack up to being progressive in this time period. He gave the example of Giordano Bruno (late 1500s) who was an influence on Karl Marx. He pointed out that people are a product of their time period and we can’t expect political correctness from someone who lived in the 1500s or any other long past century.

The US has a problem of national identity. Our culture is often identified as consisting of imperialist jingoism and crass commercialism. There is a lot truth to this. But it is up to the left to look for those progressive people and people with progressive ideas who contributed to the better side of US political culture.

It was Thomas Jefferson who said; "The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants." He and Thomas Paine opposed letting our founding fathers develop a new US aristocracy to mimic the feudalists nations of Europe in the 1700s. He and Paine also supported the French Revolution.

Nepal: Mobilising Youth for New Democratic Revolution

This is part of a continuing report from the Worlds peoples Resistance Movement as a part of a fact finding trip to Nepal.

Comrade Rashmi:

Report by Members of WPRM Britain and Ireland currently visiting Nepal.

One evening in Kathmandu, we had the pleasure of meeting Ganesh Man Pun, Comrade Rashmi, which translates as ‘Moonlight’. Coming to our hotel, Rashmi arrived in the middle of one of the daily power cuts which occur every evening, making his name more apt for the occasion as we talked over the light of the moon coming through our third floor window and one small oil burning lamp. Rashmi is a Central Committee member of the Unified Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist) as well as the Chairman of the Young Communist League (YCL).

He began our discussion by telling us his own background in the party. Becoming involved in politics as a student, Rashmi was soon a whole-timer cadre for the All-Nepal National Independent Student Union (Revolutionary) before becoming a district member of the YCL. Rising through the ranks Rashmi led one of the four attacks that comprised the initiation of the People’s War on 13th February, 1996. As commander of one of the groups, Rashmi led the attack on a police post in Rukum district, capturing many weapons and explosives. He explained to us that “after capturing many policemen, we told them the reasons for our action. We told them they are our brothers, but we are fighting for New Democratic Revolution, against feudal and comprador rule in Nepal. We released them and told them not to fight against us in the future.” 29 days after this, Rashmi’s father, a local party and Peasant Association member, was martyred, being caught in his home by the police who had been summoned by a local feudalist. The police promptly led him outside into the yard and shot him. Rashmi spoke of this incident without bitterness, but with an intense pride in the martyrdom of his father, who, he said, died for the people. For rest of the post please visit www.wprmbritain.org

US OUT OF COLOMBIA!

This country has no business extraditing leftist paramilitary persons from Colombia. This country has declared the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) and the National Liberation Army (ELN) to be terrorists groups. Neither group has ever made an attempt to commit terrorism on US soil. Both groups operate in Colombia and their differences with the government there are strictly an internal matter.

The idea that this country can take prisoners from someone else’s war is ridiculous and dangerous. This is blatant interference in the internal affairs of another country. This is nothing new, since the US presently occupies both Iraq and Afghanistan. It is ironic that the US is bringing more so called “terrorists” from other countries to the US for prosecution. Logic would dictate that this practice should be over. But apparently those inside the Obama administration just don’t get it. They still see Latin America as their back yard.

Colombia’s president, Alvaro Uribe, is a coward and a whore of the US on the South American continent. He obviously has no confidence in his own government, military or court system. To preserve his political power he has let another country take his citizens to foreign shores to be tortured, interrogated and prosecuted here.

A Maoist Model School in Jiri

Our journey started, as many do in Nepal, with a five hour bus trip where the only available free space was the roof. Although the journey was long it was only just over 100km, following narrow, windy mountain roads which were bumpy and at times treacherous. The roof however provided stunning views of the scenery and the opportunity to meet many local people, including a family of seven brothers and two sisters who found us a great source of amusement but were eager for us to visit their village and stay with their family. They were very friendly and not reserved at all, especially the girls unlike in many parts of Nepal and Asia in general, but we politely told them of our need to get to the town of Jiri in Dolakha district, east of Kathmandu.

Jiri is quite a remote town, of average size and the start of the popular trek to the Everest base camp. For this reason we were straight away accosted by hotel managers looking for business in the off-peak season. As with many tourist hotels in Nepal the managers are supporters of Nepali Congress and, indeed, the deposed royal family. In these areas images of the Dalia Lama are numerous. Our first port of call in Jiri was the Unified Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist) office, a hive of activity compared to the cemetery stillness of the Nepali Congress office opposite. There we met the Area Secretary Comrade Kulbindra, various Young Communist League (YCL) activists and a teacher from the Sahid (Martyrs) Memorial Boarding School. After a brief chat over Nepali tea, we were asked whether we wanted to walk up the easy of the difficult route to the school, which was high up a mountain. Doubting that the school could be on the very top of the mountain we chose the difficult route, a choice that would soon come back to haunt us.
