From the National Organization for Women (NOW);
By NOW President Terry O'Neill
Today Walmart has obtained a temporary restraining order against
employees and organizations protesting Walmart's discriminatory business
practices during this week's shareholder meeting in Bentonville, Arkansas. This
is Walmart's latest attempt to silence the voices that are calling for real
change at the nation's largest employer. Instead of listening to its employees
and the communities that make the company successful, Walmart -- a company with
billions in profits and all the lawyers it could ever need -- is attacking
working families and community groups. This is the same company that has been
sued repeatedly for sex discrimination and yet continues its policies that hold
women employees back. Shame on Walmart.
I am proud to join UFCW, Jobs with Justice, and OUR Walmart as we
rally outside this year's Walmart shareholders meeting. Our peaceful presence
will remind Walmart's shareholders that -- while they can attempt to silence
voices of dissent -- we will be heard.
