Another view on Russia's invasion of Ukraine

By Debra Sweet

People have written us with a legit point: People around the globe have suffered historically from reactionary violence backed by the U.S. and its allies - right now in Yemen for instance - but these aggressive acts get mostly ignored by U.S. politicians and press, while the Russian attack on Ukraine is 24/7 news. But then, no one has proved that the U.S. isn't #1 in hypocrisy.

In one sense, the plunder of oppressed countries isn't news when people here have been trained that the U.S. is "the good guy," just looking out for them. But this deadly show-down in Ukraine is different. The U.S. imperialist empire/NATO and Russia contending over who will control Eastern Europe could trigger a nuclear exchange at worst, and is certainly disastrous even if it stops short of that.

We oppose deadly U.S. sanctions and encirclement of Russia and we oppose the Russian aggression against Ukraine and repression of anti-war protesters.  The interests of humanity lie with neither power.

But the most important question to ask - and to find a solution to - is why we tolerate the global set-up of imperialist powers exploiting billions and destroying the globe, literally?

Join in protests this weekend saying no to NATO expansion and demanding Russian troops out of Ukraine. Check here for a listing of planned protests around the country and a sign-up form if you want to plan your own (contact us at the National Office by email or by calling 646-807-3259 if you need more info). Here in NYC, join us at Duffy Square, at the north end of Times Square, tomorrow Saturday March 5 at 3:00 pm.
