What a spin. Thousands protest against the US presents and our “fair and balanced” Los Angeles Times (reprinted in The Wichita Eagle, April 10) decides this is evidence that democracy is working in Iraq. The same article said the US will not set a deadline for leaving. US troops leaving might allow real democracy. Then again, there’s not much real democracy left here in the United Snakes.
According to Anti-War.com:
· “In Baghdad, Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld told reporters the U.S. has no "exit strategy" for the country – just a "victory strategy." That statement seems in line with the sentiment of most lawmakers on Capitol Hill. They're posed to approve another $80 billion for American military activities in Iraq and Afghanistan.
· Included in the request is money to construct 14 "enduring" military bases in Iraq and one in Afghanistan.
· Democratic senators say they have no choice but to join their Republican colleagues and approve $80 billion more for the wars.
· Meantime, the Los Angeles Times reported this week that of the 20 water treatment and 24 sewage plants San Francisco-based Bechtel Corporation had announced it fixed, none are currently working.”
Is it also a sign of democracy that a war profiteer was recently kidnapped by insurgents? His friends and family have put out the yellow ribbons and are saying prayers for him. Jeffrey Ake went over to sell water to thirsty people. All I can say is “play with fire and you get burned.” In his case it was playing with water, but the results are the same.
If another contractor gets what’s coming to him, let it be a lesson to others. “Stay home!!!!”

Selling water, electricity, cell phones or whatever will not lessen the burden of empire. Our benevolent and benign neo colonialism is exploding in front of our faces.
