Pope John Paul II is dead. He was a nice man, in the same way the Wizard of Oz was a nice man, but he admitted to being a bad wizard. The Pope was a nice guy, but he was a Pope. The Catholic Church is a left-over from the Roman Empire and has always stood on the side of the rich and powerful against change that would empower the poor and powerless. The most powerful political institution of the middle ages has lost only part of its political pull, in modern times, despite what the Vatican wants us to believe.
The Vatican is completely sexually segregated and has done almost nothing for the benefit of women.
There is little doubt that the Church has collaborated with fascist elements. Robert A Graham wrote The Pope and the Nazi regime;: Notes from the [German Foreign Office] Archives (Pius XII and the Axis in World War II). This book documented the Vatican’s collaboration with the Nazis.
Time magazine also documented the Church’s collaboration with the CIA, February, 24, 1992.The cover story read “Holy Alliance, How Reagan and the Pope conspired to assist Poland’s Solidarity movement and hasten the demise of Communism.”
The Vatican represents some of the most reactionary and backward politics in the world. In recent years it has tried to tell its followers how to vote. In the US that has meant to vote Republican and “pro-life” (anti-abortion). Politicians have been threatened with ex-communication for voting pro-choice.
A good example of the church’s corruption is the foot dragging and cover-ups of the pedophile priests.
Here are some relevant quotes about Catholicism and religion in general:
“I began to break away from the Catholic Church. The decision was based on two things. First, they have had an unrealistic view on sex. For example, in the fall of 1977 Catholic Bishop Mibalony endorsed a petition drive against a gay-rights ordinance that the Wichita City Council had passed. A group of fundamentalist Christians called Concerned Citizens for Upstanding Community Decency initiated the petition drive. I had to ask myself: “why does the Catholic Church want to persecute people over their sexual orientation? What harm do these people do?”
Second, I had read that the church hierarchy had a history of extensive relationships with various fascist elements, including Adolf Hitler’s German Nazis and Gen. Francisco Franco’s government in Spain. I had always been told that the church’s history of political involvement was supposed to be over. But I could see that it was not. Pope John Paul II condemned the pro-Sandinista faction of the Catholic Church in Nicaragua.”
-Mark Spies, from Memoirs Of A Drugged-up, Sex-crazed Yippie.
"Marx's law will assert itself: religion will wither away as exploitation and oppression are destroyed and eliminated."
-Abimael Guzman, from an interview published in 1991.
“NO GOD: NO MASTER”
-Industrial Workers of the World protester, circa 1917.
“If anyone decides to call the sea Neptune,
And corn Ceres, and misuse the name of Bacchus
Rather than give grape juice its proper title,
Let us agree that he can call the earth
Mother of the Gods, on this condition__
That he refuses to pollute his mind
With the foul poison of religion.”
- T. Lucretius Carus (born about 100 BC) On the Nature of the Universe.
