Former Peruvian President Alan Garcia, whose 1985-90 term left his country in economic ruin, won a runoff election against left-of-center former army officer Ollanta Humala, preliminary results showed June 6, according to the Peoples Weekly World, June 10.
Garcia originally called himself a democratic socialist. But he left his country in shambles, unable to do almost anything right. It may be seen by a few people, even those in Peru, as a move to the left. But this is not Venezuela or Bolivia.
Garcia is much more conservative and will probably run Peru as incompatibly as he did in the 1980s.
