End Guantanamo as a detention and torture center with a rally

It's long past time to close Guantanamo. This has been an embarrassment for many of us and one of the low points of the failed presidency of George W. Bush. His actions in Guantanamo have drawn world condemnation and now is the time to put an end to them. - 史蒂夫・奥托

President-elect Barack Obama has promised to close the U.S. military prison at Guantánamo and end the use of torture by the U.S. We intend to help make that a reality. This Sunday, January 11, Witness Against Torture -- a Catholic Worker-led UFPJ member group -- will mark the 7th year of the use of Guantanamo as a detention and torture center with a rally and procession in Washington, D.C. And on January 20, the 100 Days to Close Guantánamo & End Torture will begin in Washington and around the country.
United For Peace and Justice has co-sponsored this timely effort, and we encourage you to participate in it and lend your support. For more information about how you can be involved, please check the details below.

"I have said repeatedly that I intend to close Guantánamo, and I will follow through on that. I have said repeatedly that America doesn't torture, and I'm going to make sure that we don't torture." - President-elect Barack Obama, November 16, 2008
CALL TO ACTION With Obama taking office, we have a historic opportunity to reverse the disastrous torture policies of the last eight years. We begin on Sunday, January 11, 2009, which marks seven years of detention and torture at Guantanamo. We want this to be the last time we come to Washington to demand the closing of the detention camp at Guantanamo and an end to torture!
January 11, 12:45pm at Dupont Circle in DC

Featuring speakers, the Theater Against Torture, torture survivor Hector Aristizabal, a Puppet Brigade, and a procession of people wearing orange jumpsuits and black hoods. January 11 - January 20 in DC & elsewhwere Fast for Justice Following the rally at Dupont Circle, more than 40 people will begin a liquid-only fast (most will be at the White House) that will continue through Inauguration Day. Please join us! January 20 - April 30 in DC & the US 100 Days to Close Guantánamo & End Torture In addition to a sustained physical presence at the White House, there will be organized activities - from film screenings to lectures and community meetings - in Washington, DC, and across the country. These activities are designed to mobilize people concerned about torture and keep sustained pressure on our elected officials to close Guantánamo with deliberate speed. We are hoping small groups people will join us in DC for a week at time.
