Haiti’s destruction

In a poor country racked by revolts and coups, the US has done nothing to make life better for the people before the earthquake. Now there is an outpouring of sympathy and once again the military is sent to help out. We don’t send bridge builders but we do send men in arms, maybe because we’ve spent almost nothing else on foreign aid.
The lack of proper roads alone have compounded the problems of the earthquake. Compared to San Francisco where the best minds have gone into earthquake proofing buildings, how much efforts of that kind have gone to Haiti?
The communications systems are down there due to their inadiquacy. The last time the US got involved in Haiti, President George W. Bush supported a military coup against the elected President Jean-Bertrand Aristide. Aristide tried to be a popular supporter of Haiti’s poor. Military leaders were backed by Western influences that were more concerned about Haiti’s few resources.

As usual, some conservatives have made asses of themselves:

Rush Limbaugh Haiti Earthquake

And Pat Robertson is incoherent

There are relief efforts for Haiti at Freedom Road and The Kasama Project.
