Pushpa Kamal Dahal
UML vice-chairman
Bam Dev Gautam
United Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist) chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal has made overtures to members of the Unified Marxist Leninist (UML) suggesting that Nepal’s Communist groupings unite with them against the rightist parties of that country. The UCPN(M) has been in a crisis with the government for the last year, since they pulled out of the government over the issue of civilian control of the military. Both the military, some of Nepal’s right-wing parties and the Maoist have been gearing up for an all out conflict.
So far the country has been in a stale mate. The UCPN(M) is the largest political party and has begun a campaign to re-establish itself in rural areas. The Maoist have ended the people’s war and are now using a variety of strategies to try and regain the political upper hand they had when the war ended.
