For the Republican Party picking on the handicap, disabled and anyone with mental or physical problems just never gets old. Just when we think they can’t stoop any lower, the come up with an attempt to reauthorize the Federal Workforce Investment Act. The bill is before the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions, of which Senator Pat Roberts is a member.
This will allow employees to hire disables workers for less than the Federal Minimum Wage. Last week a local group of people picked out the sight of Roberts office here in Wichita , KS , against this measure. According to The Wichita Eagle, the National Federation of the Blind spearheaded the protest.
The changes are buried in the Workforce Investment Act so that it is hard to get through the whole act to see what the fuss is about. But it is the usual argument in favor of special privileges for those who use the act to hire those with disabilities and treats them as second class citizens with no reason to have a full wage for their work.
This is a huge step backward, but in this time of balancing the national debt on the backs of the poor, old and disabled, it is nothing unusual. It’s only a matter of time before they make it easier to pay women and minorities less money as the nation moves backward.--សតិវ អតុ
