Teachers rally for better treatment

From

Wichita Peace and Freedom Party Examiner;

Teachers and their supporters gathered on in front of North High School to protests four years without a raise, education cuts and other issues from 4:30 to 5:30 pm Monday evening. There were about 300 people at the event.
Despite low pay and increases in work loads teachers also complained that they now have a stricter dress code and have to have all their lesson plans reviewed.
“I feel like they don’t trust me,” one teacher on the picket line said about the curriculum.
Many teachers held signs that just said 4, to represent the four years that teachers have not had a raise. The School Board and the Wichita School system were able to pass a bond issue that would raise everyone’s property tax, to pay for new school buildings, so the teachers now pay higher taxes and don’t have a raise to compensate.
This year Governor Sam Brownback has cut the school budget by $232 per pupil. The school system has fired several teachers to help make up the cost difference. We now have more crowded class rooms and fewer teachers, sense the district has fired so many.
The city has several administrators making more that 200 thousand a year, including John Allison. Cutting these ridiculous salaries would free up some money to pay teachers.
Occupy Wichita also took part in the event and they provided much of the above information.
