Our latest presidential debate proves once again
that we are looking at style over substance. Americans are getting darn used to
that. Today a person is much more likely to see ABC's Nightline news show cover Dancing With The
Stars rather than the war in Syria .
Any real news is getting harder to find on actual news shows.
So it was no surprise that the candidates in
last night’s debates were not graded on their clarity of issues or their
honesty. There were fact checkers, but no one really cared that both candidates
fudged numbers to get ahead. It is all about who uses eye contact, who looks
more presidential, and who looks more concerned about the common people in the
audience.
Issues are almost a thing of the past. No one
seems to care what these candidates will do with that office. No one cares what
all these policies really mean and absolutely NO ONE cares about the ideology
of these two people.
President Barack Obama won the debate, but that
doesn’t really mean he will gain much in the polls. His policies don’t matter
to people, his personality does. It is like picking the next waitress to work
in a restaurant, not someone to run a country.
So overall the debate was a waist of time and
not really much use to any serious voters, if there actually are any serious voters.
As with today’s culture, the debate was about
being technically savvy while being simple, shallow and trite at the same time.
The trick was to sound like a person of authority while saying almost nothing
at all. -សតិវ អតុ
