Wichita Peace and Freedom Party Examiner;
This year’s Earth Day events were kind of disappointing—not because the events weren’t good—but because they were poorly attended.
We live on a planet that is probably dying no matter what we do. We have examples of planets all around us that are either in the process of dying or have already died. Mars was once covered with water and Earth-like, 3 billion years ago. Today we see a planet that lost most of its atmosphere and liquid water. We have evidence from NASA that non-water liquid may be deteriorating from the moon Titan. We already know that Venus was once an Earth-like planet that now has a temperature on the surface of nearly 900°F because of the green-house affect.
The reality is that Earth itself may have the fate of dying out like its neighbors no matter what we do. Nothing in space stays the same for-ever so it is only expected that the Earth will someday have its life die out. The question is—do we as humans want to become a main reason for this.
This year’s Earth Day celebrations, at Herman Hill Park, were lot like last year’s. There was a big stage for bands to play and there were several booths displaying various Earth friendly products and causes. There was a booth for vegetarian foods, one against fracking and some Native American Indians were doing some traditional dances.
Inside the theater there was a panel discussion on various problems facing our environment. All those on the panel said they think water will be a major problem in the future of Kansas. Yvonne Cather, Kansas Sierra Club, added that there is a pipeline that is worse than the XL. It is the Enbridge, which will run parallel to pipelines that already exist.
“It will be underground, so people may not be aware of the ground water contamination,” She said.
“We have a limited supply of water here in Kansas, said Jim Mason, Kansas Natural Resource Council. “We can’t afford to take the millions of gallons it takes to frack. We don’t have that much water.”
He added that 80 percent of our water is used for agriculture and far too much of what is left is used for lawns.
“We are trying to over-green our lawns,” warned Jean Schodorf, former State Senator.
Jim Wilder, Earth Spirit Coalition Member, said we need to discourage China from making new coal plants.
“It would be great if we could talk people into having just two children,” he also said. “I don’t want to suggest we do something like a dictatorship as they did in China, but it would be nice if we could persuade people to stop at two.”
In a society where people are obsessed with giant gas guzzling vehicles and hand held gadgets, it is not surprising that protecting our environment is not a high priority. And fewer children would be less of a stress on our environment. However, people are often obsessed with passing on their genes and preserving their personal heritage or even trying to live out their lives they never had through their children.
Those who did attend and showed concern should be given plenty of credit for caring about a planet that just doesn’t get the attention it deserves.
