While Martin Luther King Jr. may seem as little more than
another corporate created Nelson Mandela we have to occasionally
see the positive in these things. For example few students in the middle school
or high school actually knew who Mandela was until he died.
Thanks to educators in Kansas, both King and Malcolm X are
known to students in the schools. Thanks to our TV stations most students know
who Beyoncé and other stars of little substance are. These people are thrown at
us each day by the news media on our TV stations as if they were way more
important than King or Malcolm.
King did take on the establishment without flinching a bit
while police in the south sprayed him and others with fire hoses and dogs. He
may have been non-violent, but he was not a coward or someone who feared
controversy. He did travel around the World and met both Mahatma Gandhi and Kwame
Nkrumah. King was also against the war in Vietnam.
So I’m glad I had yester day off and I’m glad school
students are constantly reminded that Martin Luther King took Chances for a better
life for his own people and the rest of the Wolds people.
