The People's Liberation Army of Thailand or PLAT is the armed wing of the Communist Party of Thailand (CPT). In 1959 the Communist insurgency begun in 1961 at the 3rd congress of the CPT it was officially decided to launch a rural based protracted peoples war and the PLAT was formed as the armed wing of the party. The PLAT had initial support from the impoverished peasants and tribal of the Northeast who had suffered due to the infertility of the land and insufficient amount of water and from the Muslim religious minority. During the 1970s after a military coup thousands of people labourers, students and even left leaning and liberal politicians fled to join the CPT. The PLAT/CPT reached its height in the mid 1970s with over 15,000 fighters and 12,000 non combatant members. During the late 1980s the PLAT/CPT suffered issues it became isolated in the north and south China removed its support and in the mid 80s the Vietnamese revisionists followed, many of the fighters deserted during to a lack of food urban dwellers who had joined the movement in the 1970s were not used to the extreme conditions and their was a split in the party between Maoists and Revisionists. By the late 1980s the PLAT had a few hundred fighters and has been relatively inactive since the early 1990s.
