This reporter, Caleb Maupin, gave a great analysis of US society and why gun violence is
so prevalent here, about a year ago in response to the shooting of two TV reporters. He makes a lot of sense. There are a lot of people in other
countries who could easily get the wrong idea about what it is like here in the US. It is hard
to imagine that the wealthiest country in the world could possibly have some of the worst poverty
in the world. But it does. Sure we don't have people living far from
electricity or clean water, as in some third world countries. But we do have
homeless people and people who die from inadequate health care. We have some of
the best health care in the world and their are people who will never get to
use any of it because they are poor and can't afford it.
It is hard to be poor in this country. There seems to be a
lot of resentment and contempt by wealthier people and some from the middle
class who seem to believe all the poor people are lazy and getting government
assistance. That assistance is nearly gone. Most poor people can't get it. I constantly hear people complain that homeless people who
panhandle are trying to scam people and there is suspicion that they really
have lots of money but just panhandle to scam others and make a lot of money. For that reason poor
people have to deal with a lot of contempt against them. And Maupin is right. Other countries should not aspire to
this. -SJ Otto
So here is an assessment from Maupin:
