In the shadow of Tiananmen Square ,
were the Chinese government mowed down protesters in 1989, it would seem almost
suicidal to expect the Chinese government to respect a direct challenge to
communist control of the government. Yet protesters in Hong Kong are acting as
if they believe they can break away from mainland China
and form some kind of capitalist separate government in Hong
Kong . From Los
Angeles Times:
“Protesters in their Sunday
march appealed to President Trump to “stand with Hong Kong” and ensure Congress
passes a bill that proposes economic sanctions and penalties on Hong Kong and China officials
who are found to be suppressing democracy and human rights in the city.”
Did they really believe the US can save them from the actions
of the Chinese mainland government? They may have believed that the government
is vulnerable and week since they had already beaten the government on the issue
on dropping the extradition bill that originally sparked
the protests:
“Hong Kong ’s
government agreed last week to withdraw an extradition bill that sparked a
summer of protests, but demonstrators want other demands to be met, including
direct elections of city leaders and an independent inquiry into police
actions.”
They may seriously believe their government will back down
to them. But if we can believe the history of China , that is not likely. The
government is not likely to allow a foreign government to intervene in China ’s
affairs. The protesters in Hong Kong are not very smart if they really believe
the US
government can magically come to their aid.
