Women take to the streets to protest sexual violence in response to a high-profile gang rape case

Tens of thousands of women and allies have taken to the streets across Bangladesh to protest against sexual violence in response to a high-profile gang rape case.

The mass protests were sparked after a video emerged of several men gang-raping a woman. The assault took place in September but began spreading on social media last week. 8 men have now been arrested in connection with the crime. The survivor is a married woman and mother of two. The woman told local media that the men had filmed the assault and threatened to post it online as a form of extortion. When she resisted, they released it.

Anger is mounting over sexual violence toward women in Bangladesh, which has become a crisis in the country. According to women's rights groups almost 1,000 women have been raped, including 200+ gang-raped, in just the first 9 months of 2020, which might be only a fraction of the actual number of cases of rape in Bangladesh.
