The Occupy Wall Street movement may be slowing down due to the holiday season and cold weather. Yet at this point I would speculate that this movement is not just going to go away as so many politicians hope.
Fox News and all their political allies continue to call these people “dirty hippies” or “drugged up kids.” Some people have argued that they don’t have enough numbers. When was the last time a movement spread to every city in the country, within weeks, with followers able to take over parks and road ways? They shut down a major bridge in
. Nothing has happened like that since the 1960s. Some people complain that this movement doesn’t have an issue to form around, such as Civil Rights or the Vietnam War. But this movement is not that much different from the Civil Rights movement of the 1960s. Instead of black people, the minority is the working poor and poor people in general. New York City
How long have the Republicans relentlessly attack the poor by cutting all their safety nets? Then the poor have had to endure insult directed at them such as Herman Cain when he said “if you’re not rich blame yourself.” Some people may want to believe this, so they can live in comfort and blame the victims of poverty.
If anything the Occupy movement has shown that there is a breaking point when people are relentlessly attacked by the political system.
Similar to the 1960s draft that forced young people to face going to war against their will, today’s young people are facing rising education costs, a lack of job opportunities after they graduate, global warming and other actions against the environment that they will have to deal with, while the older Republicans will be dying off. As one young man said to me “shit is going to hit the fan and we will be left trying to fix it.”
If there is one politician that deserves to be thrown out and forced to resign it is Mayor Michael Bloomberg. While he may just be the New York City Mayor, he represents the hard headed, brute politicians who now dominate this country. Lies about filthy conditions and drug dealers, were given when he had police arrest the people in the park and then destroyed their property to try and discourage his opponents and prove he is a tough leader.
This coming presidential election is a no-win situation. President Barack Obama has been blocked from doing anything by Republicans who are dedicated to destroying his presidency. The Republican candidates are all nightmares waiting to happen.
Tea Party Republicans run most of congress and they have done everything they can to tighten their grip on power by using such gimmicks as new voter photo ID laws that make it harder for poor people to vote. The mainstream press covers mostly the Tea Party Republicans and avoids talking to the Occupy people. This has led a lot of young people, as well as older ones, to feel that voting is useless at this point. Neither of the two political parties in congress offer any hope of change.
So the Occupy movement still threatens a government that acts as if they are invincible. By next summer politicians may have to face the fact that the Occupiers are not just going to give up and go home. They will continue to refuse to be bought off with cheap slogans and lies.
There are online bloggers and leftwing news outlets for the right-wing lies about “kids who want to play hippies” to really fool the overwhelming majority in this country. The whole world is watching.
