Recent news stories
are demonstrating how dedicated Kansas Governor Sam Brownback, and many other
conservative Republicans, are to destroying the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) and making sure that no poor people benefit from it. Whether
it is a case of ideological extremism or outright contempt for society’s poor,
the results are the same—people will suffer and die in this state for being
poor. And if his proposed Health Care Compact goes into effect, old people will
never realize the benefits that this society has promised retired people for
the last 50 years.
Just recently the Daily Kos reported; “One of the architects of the Affordable Care Act, Jonathon Gruber, told Harold Pollack that the Republican resistance to Medicaid expansion—leaving nearly 5 million people deliberately out of the system—is "almost awesome in its evilness."
I couldn’t agree more. The attempts to kill any effects of this new health care law are at best a horrible case of neglect and at worst they are pure cruelty. Georgia and Kansas have left a combined 487,000 residents uncovered under Obamacare because they refused to expand Medicaid. Back in February Georgia Governor Nathan Deal decided to do the same thing that Brownback did in passing laws that make it nearly impossible for the next governor to change directions and work with the federal government to expand Medicaid to comply with Obamacare. Brownback seems to realize the public might be fed up enough with his inept leadership to vote him out of office. So he wants to make sure the damage he inflicted on this state will live on without him there to defend it. There is no limit to the effort he puts into keeping the poor unhealthy and in danger of dying early.
On Thursday he signed into law his Health Care Compact so the state will now be in charge of Medicare as well as Medicaid. This way he is complete free of having anything to do with Obamacare. If his handling of education is any indication of his handling of Medicare—then we older people can expect an all-out disaster when we finally retire—that is if we can afford to retire after Brownback decimates all of our benefits. My wife plans to retire in two years and I plan to retire in 10. I always thought that I would finally get some benefits from working my whole life for this system and paying taxes into it. Now it looks like I will get screwed just like the poor are now.
The Daily Kos and I are not the only ones afraid of our governor’s actions.
According to The Wichita Eagle; “Insurance Commissioner Sandy Praeger and the AARP have voiced concern that the new law will disrupt Medicare in Kansas. Federal health care dollars would come to Kansas as a block grant for the state to administer.
More than 448,000 Kansans rely on Medicare for their health care needs and this policy puts them at risk, said Maren Turner, the Kansas director of the AARP, which urged the governor to veto the bill.”
The one positive thing about our governor is the possibility that he will be voted out of office in the next election. He has been the worst governor in Kansas that I ever had to live under and I hope we never get anyone this bad again. It will take years to undo all the damage he has inflicted on this state and this is IF we can get rid of this kind of destructive narrow minded conservatism.
