From Yahoo News:
Defectors shine light on horrors of N.
Korea life
".....As a
boy, Joseph Kim could only watch helplessly, he says, as he saw his father
"wither and die" in the isolated country's devastating famine in the
1990s, which led to the tragic disintegration of his once "loving"
family.
The two young
defectors gave a rare and heartbreaking insight into what they described as
lives of deprivation, hunger and abuse in North Korea during an event at the
State Department to mark Human Rights Day."
For the rest click

So we see the US
State Department mark Human Rights Day by taking aim at its favorite wiping boy
Democratic People's Republic of (North) Korea . I don't claim that the DPRK
has an absolutely perfect record on human rights, or that it is significantly
better on human rights than the US .
But after all the police
shootings of unarmed black people and the
findings of CIA torture of prisoners, this campaign is ridiculous.
It seems strange to me that no one in the State Department
seems to realize how ridiculous the country looks to the critical eye of
citizens such as myself. I also can't help wondering how many non-US citizens
from the rest of the world see this and wonder how this nation and its government
can be so obtuse.
But they can. Maybe it is simply a matter of not facing
reality. The US 's real main
objection to DPRK is that the country has outlasted the cold war without being subjugated
to the US
empire. There is a big chunk of real estate the US simply can't get its hands on.
The DPRK government is able to reject the usual bullying from a bellowing
empire.
A country such as mine, (US) that pays so little attention to
its on citizens' rights, and those of its imperialist subjects, can only shed crocodile
tears over these human rights abuses. -សតិវ អតុ
Naturally the DPRK has its own take
on the US and it phony Human Rights Day events:

Rodong Sinmun Ridicules U.S. Talk about
"Human Rights
From Rodong
Sinmun, commentary.
Since
the emergence of the state, racial discrimination has been an abscess of the U.S. society.
Racist
laws in force in the U.S.
at present whip up extreme social atmosphere of discriminating against the
colored races.
Deplorable
is the fact that policemen of the country top the list of all human rights
abuses and racial discrimination though they are obliged to protect the rights
of the residents and put its society in good order.
It is
stark reality of the U.S.
that even soldiers are involved in suppressing the people who turned out in
demonstration against racism.
The
great irony is that the U.S. ,
worst human rights abuser, is trumpeting about "human rights
protection" and "improved human rights."
The
world public advises the U.S.
to mind its own business, aware of its awkward position.
It had
better get more serious about its reactionary, unpopular and corrupt social
system than taking "pain" to settle the "human rights
issue" of someone.
