Among the states that seem over the top when it comes to punishing people needlessly is Arizona . Even before the controversial immigration law, Arizonans voted in Sheriff Joe Arpaio, not only tough, but also mean-spirited.
He puts convicted criminals in tents, outdoors. He feeds them only twice a day. The average meal costs about 15 cents a day. There have been accusations that the food and conditions are detrimental to the inmate’s health. He also has them work for free in chain gangs.
The ACLU has accused Arpaio of feeding them moldy bread, rotten fruit and other contaminated food, housing them in cells so hot as to endanger their health, denying them care for serious medical and mental health needs and keeping them packed as tightly as sardines in holding cells for days at a time during intake.
An equally despicable politician is Arizona Governor Jan Brewer. In order to look hard on crime she refused to release an inmate who is more than 70 years old and dying . Brewer refused to let him out of prison after an executive clemency board, she put together, found the man, William Macumber, not guilty, and requested he be released. Brewer denied the request despite all the evidence.
It is no surprise that Sarah Palin came to Arizona for a Tea Party rally to praise all of these politicians.
We have to wonder what kind of people live in Arizona to elect such brutal people to office. And how can anyone support the new racist immigration law that was passed there. It seems a throw back to the days of the civil rights struggle. It makes the rest of us want to avoid going to that state or spending any money where the politicians are so cruel, racist and mean spirited.
