All morning long all the major TV news stations had nothing except news of the engagement of Prince William to Kate Middleton. And Kate will wear her Mother Princess Diana’s Ring!
Did the world stop?! Was there no other news worthy events? It is amazing that Middleton will be the first commoner to marry into the royal family in more than 300 years. But what does that mean? Do all of us really care?
I know I don’t. The royals of today have no power. Nor should they have any. Throughout history they acted as absolute dictators who savagely killed those who displeased them when they had power. Now they are just relicts of the past. Some people have talked of Middleton’s lack of career. Now her career is to be a tourist attraction. All she has to do is show up at certain events and wave to people. She and her husband will get paid well for as little work as their job entails. Their biggest burden will be the constant attention from the paparazzi (tabloid photographers).
The difference between royal blood and common blood is nil. The whole idea of royalty has faded over the last two centuries and it should. Democracy has replaced the power of those who are supposedly “divinely chosen by god to rule.” The divine rights theory is dead and I’m glad of it.
