From Wichita Peace and Freedom Party Examiner;
This April will see a renewed effort by the Occupy movement, being organized by a group calling this action the 99% Spring. There plans are to gather 100,000 people from around the country from April 9-15.
Although their plans include cities across the country, their teachers were here at the Wichita Peace and Social Justice Center just last week. The group who attended included a lot of people from the Hispanic community who are afraid that the Kansas Republicans, especially Secretary of State Kris Kobach, who are trying to make it hard for them to vote and plan to take other rights away from them. In the first session people talked of common goals, visions and what kind of communities we really want.
They are planning more meetings in Kansas to help people learn how to use non-violent tactics. Much of what they plan is modelled after Martin Luther King, Jr. On their Website they said;
“From April 9-15 we will gather across America, 100,000 strong, in homes, places of worship, campuses and the streets to join together in the work of reclaiming our country. We will organize trainings to:
- Tell the story of our economy: how we got here, who’s responsible, what a different future could look like, and what we can do about it
- Learn the history of non-violent direct action, and
- Get into action on our own campaigns to win change.”
