The situation in Nicaragua has
not been good. President Daniel Ortega has not been very democratic. He has run
things much as a dictator. However, the US has tried real hard to over
throw him and replace him with a right-wing leader. They are also trying to
route out all traces of the Sandinistas. From The Grayzone:

The
plot is administered by the United States Agency for International Development
(USAID), a regime-change vehicle that uses the pretense of
“humanitarian aid” to advance Washington’s aggressive foreign-policy
interests.
The
document (PDF) details the creation of a new “task
order” called Responsive Assistance in Nicaragua (RAIN) and its plan for
“Nicaragua’s transition to democracy” – a euphemism for removing the leftist Sandinista
Front for National Liberation (known commonly by the Spanish acronym FSLN) from
power.
In
the pages, the US government
agency uses hardline neoconservative rhetoric, referring to Nicaragua’s elected government as the “Ortega
regime,” and making it clear that Washington
wants to install a neoliberal administration that will privatize the economy,
impose neoliberal reforms, and purge all institutions of any trace of the
leftist Sandinista movement.
The
USAID regime-change scheme states openly that one of its top “mission goals” is
for Nicaragua to “transition to a rules-based
market economy” based on the “protection of private property rights.”
The
document concludes by calling for the future US-installed regime in Nicaragua
to “rebuild institutions” and “reestablish” the military and police; to
“dismantle parallel institutions” that support the Sandinista Front; and to
persecute FSLN leaders through “transitional justice measures” – in other
words, a thorough purge of the Sandinista movement to prevent it from ever
returning to power.
This is all out war against any
leftist form of government. It is for that reason we should support the
government now in Nicaragua
against all attempts by the US
to destroy it. It is not so important to support Ortega, however there are progressive
elements of the Sandinistas and they are worth defending. From The Cuban
newspaper Granma:

Cuban First Vice President Salvador Valdés Mesa, participated July 19 in the national commemoration of the Sandinista Revolution’s 40th anniversary, in Managua, Nicaragua, stating that the triumph of the Sandinistas represents a victory against foreign intervention in the nation, and reaffirming the willingness of our peoples to struggle and resist imperialism.
Gathered in the Plaza La Fe, more than 500 international guests accompanied thousands of Nicaraguans during the celebration, where the vice president of this sister nation, Rosario Murillo, insisted "The brave and honorable people of our Nicaragua, always blessed and free, never sells out or surrenders.”
"At 40 years, full of glory, youth, history, and future, the Sandinista Popular Revolution marches on successfully and proudly," she said.
“Nicaragua pains them, love pains them, we sing, on the 40th anniversary of the Sandinista Revolution, that changed Latin American history,” wrote Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez on Twitter, while congratulating Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega, Vice President Rosario Murillo, the Sandinista National Liberation Front, and this sister people.
Cuba’s Foreign Minister, Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla, recalled the words of Comandante en Jefe Fidel Castro, who said, “The Sandinista victory is not only a victory over 45 years of Somoza; it is a victory over 150 years of foreign domination.”
