The City would not have a problem with flooding if they refuse to let developers build in the flood plains of the Cowskin Creek. But the developers own Wichita and its leaders. No one has more local authority than local developers. So the taxpayers of this city, not the developers will pay for the improvements.
According to The Wichita Eagle:
“WICHITA — A major excavation project dedicated in west Wichita today should reduce flood levels on the Cowskin Creek by about a foot.
That could save an estimated $429,180 in property damage each year along the flood-prone waterway, City Council member Jeff Longwell said.
The project is essentially a shelf dug along the creek near the Maple Street bridge that will hold millions of gallons of overflow water when heavy rains swell the creek beyond its banks.”
