Liberal democracies, such as those in the US and India quickly turn fascist when threatened by a political insurgency. The latest example is in India where the government is considering charges against Arundhati Roy for her series of news reports on the tribal people and Maoist fighters targeted by the Indian governmen’s Operation Green Hunt.
As with Peru in the 1980s, journalists are targets of the government for printing any news that might be considered pro-insurgent. Roy should be protected under the first amendment, which all capitalist democracies have in one form or another. But this freedom is quickly tossed aside when a government feels threatened. This is a question of “shooting the messenger.” All Roy did was report on the Maoist and what they were doing. The US has already banned giving press to the other side of recent conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan and the mainstream press doesn’t even try to cover such opposition, from the actual insurgence point of view.
