Oppose US mercenaries in the Ukraine war

By Steve Otto

The American Mercenaries caught by the Russians, in Ukraine, are taking part in a war they have no business being involved in. They talk about helping the Ukrainians, but they are simply adventurists who seem to love being in a war. Some of these people left their families to be mercenaries. That is irresponsible. A father’s main responsibility should be to his family and not the adventures of war. Now the families complain they want their relatives back and information on them. They should have stopped them from going at all.

These people are simply mercenaries. They should have stayed home and taken care of their families. Now some are captured, and they are paying the price for what they did.

Our government should stop wasting time on those who choose to get their nose into someone else’s war. We never need mercenaries.

India-ON 25TH DEATH ANNIVERSARY LET US RESURRECT KARTIK PANNALAL TO ERADICATE THE IRON FEET OF FASCISM

ON 25TH DEATH ANNIVERSARY LET US RESURRECT KARTIK PANNALAL TO ERADICATE THE IRON FEET OF FASCISM WHICH IS SIMMERING AT A BOILING POINT. KARTIK  WAS A LIVING PROOF THAT THE MOST SPIRITUAL PEOPLE WERE THEMARXIST REVOLUTIONARIES

By Harsh Thakor

Kartik Pannalal was simply an ornament in his own right to the democratic Rights, Student and Communist revolutionary movement whose memories will shimmer forever. Kartik may be gone but his souls still sparkles in the hearts of many a well-wisher like an inextinguishable star. Today night on June 4th we commemorate his 25th death anniversary when he perished in a road accident at the conclusion of fact finding team in Kashmir.

I would have loved a Kartik reborn today with tide of Hindu communal fascism shimmering at a boiling point, corporates given patronage to plunder wealth , at an unprecedented magnitude ,Kashmir turned into a fascist state and the world in crisis of third world war as never before.

Kartik was born in a wealthy Jain family in Mumbai, which inherited extensive family trusts. Its remarkable how he culturally evolved in spite of such a traditional upbringing. It is perfectly illustrated in a photo at the age of 11 in 1979 .Posing with his sisters in a wedding at the Taj Hotel in Mumbai  Kartik wore  a wedding suit   with his sisters Rupande and Sona clad in traditional Ghagra Cholis. However exotic those Ghagras looked his sister Rupande who became a social activist later, resented wearing such robes.

A bright student in school,Kartik was forced to study engineering but later rebelled against him. His initial baptism into the revolutionary arena was through interacting with his sister Rupande , a social activist in the Tata Institute of Social Sciences in 1986,This put him in touch with the social reality of the time, be it people in slums or factories.Kartik joined St Xaviers college and Stephen Rego of Vidhyarti Pragahati Sanghata had a profound impact on him.. In late 1986 Kartik formally joined the Vidhyarti Praghati Sanghatana. I was no witness of Kartik's evolution from an embryonic stage as I only met him at the end of 1988.Bastian Vailanga 's book Introduction to Marxism 'ignited the spark within Kartik.

I can never forget my times with him as a college boy even if we were some kind of rivals Activists or sympathisers of that time always identify me and Karthik as the 2 students in Mumbai in 1990-91, joining the ranks of the Marxist-Leninist Movement. I first met him in the vicinity of Elphinstone college in end of 1988,when he motivated me to join to a camp in Dahanu conducted by Kashtakari Sanghatana. It was an experience that left a mark on me.to join the fold of revolutionary activism.

I have vivid memories of our mutual discussion on theoretical questions and on merits of organisations. Memories shimmer in my mind of our presence in protests or public meetings as well as mutual arguments. We never belonged to the same political group and we had sharp disagreements .Mutual clashes took place  between the erstwhile Peoples War Group which his student organisation VPS  identified with  and the Chandra Pulla Reddy Group ,which was affiliated to PRAVIS, the student group I belonged to.

Kartik's handling of the rape case committed by Avinash Patil in Elphinstone College in 1989 had a profound effect on me and steered many an Elphinstone student out of the morass of apathy. He displayed great familiarity with the idioms of the students and brilliantly rallied a core group to bring the rapist to the book.

Kartik from 1990-92 with surgical skill galvanised the student cadre  in St.Xaviers college  as a member of Vidhyarti Praghati Sanghatana , to support the Canteen  Workers Strike and abolish the contract labour system.. It was remarkable how he turned the minds of students belonging to the elite strata of society and indoctrined with conventional values of capitalist society, which generally sides with the exploiter classes ,to support struggling workers .I recollect how students would swarm at the gate of the college when Kartik arrived. Kartik pioneered the publication of magazine ; Chingaar' which put to the table all the students issues of that day be it the Mandal Commission, fee-hikes, Communalism, New Education Policy, Privatisation of education  or hotel facilities. A cadre was revolved around the magazine which with close vigil noted how a crystallisation was occurring with the advent of globalisation.

As a fellow comrade Kartik often felt when I was distributing party journal of revolutionary groups I was being used and felt that it was improper to use student cadre for selling Maoist literature. Of course this view is questionable. I can't forget how I flitted with different groups like Lok Jagruti Kendra, Chandra Pulla Reddy Group and Red Star group in such a short duration, from age of 21-24 and how Kartik strongly felt it was an excuse to leave an organization. He was a firm adherent that an activist should struggle within the framework of one political group.

Kartik was most effective in working amongst basti residents and his humane touch won the affection of many a resident. His style was distinctive from a conventional Marxist activist, having characteristics of his very own. I can't forget are joint participation in demonstration s defending slum dewllers.

During the 1992-93 Mumbai riots Kartik waged a sustained battle to garner all forces to orchestrate self defence commitees against riots and invested every ounce of energy in saving the Muslim community. Few activists then displayed as exemplary patience in dealing with the Muslim victims as Kartik who himself conducted a separate teaching school for them. With astute skill Kartik launched an ideological crusade on the Hindutva Shiv Sena and played a major role in testifying the Shiv Sena crimes in the tribunalKartik played a vital role in shaping the Peoples Tribunal.

Kartik was critical of the social reformist approach of the Ekta Forum led by Ashar Ali Engineer and wholeheartedly supported the Jammu and Kashmir National Liberation Front in Kashmir in 1990.He was convinced that India was on the threshold of turning into a Hindu fascist state.

The pinnacle of his activist life was in exposing the misdeeds of the Indian govt in Kashmir from the mid 1990's.Karthik was one of the boldest voices as an intellectual and activists against state terror unleashed against Kashmiris fighting for self determination and how it was fast being stripped of any rights. Most bravely with the tenacity of a soldier he confronted Hindu communal elements. He was part of an All-India fact finding team first in 1995 and then in 1997.Later he even enrolled for a doctorate in studies on Kashmir.Kartik alos played an important role in the All India seminar on Nationality question staged in Delhi in 1986 by All India Peoples Resistance Forum.

We parted ways after 1992 when he made his journey seriously into the Civil Liberties movement after qualifying as a lawyer and was in the forefront of work in the Committee of Protection of Democratic Rights. Just shortly before his death we met in a programme commemorating Comrade Gadar in Dadar.Although we met for only a short while, i was happy he had lost none of his purity or human touch. The duration when we lost touch with each other coincided with my first job in the Taj Air Caterers from late 1994  ,which gave me insight into social labour Although I left formal activism from 1992-96  became an unofficial supporter  of the CCRI  from 1992 to late 94 which later merged into the CPRCI(ML).in 1995.

Kartik's post -death commemoration meeting in Hall of Bombay Union of Journalists sprung people from all walks of life .In the view of VPS leader Arun Ferreira Karthik was in some ways a replica or incarnate of Che Guevera ,whether standing with a cigarette in his mouth when calling students in, whether addressing a press meeting or even in his contemplating or cracking a joke. I was touched to hear ex Naujwan Bharat Sabha leader Stephen Rego state "That although I taught him so much .in the end it was I who learned from him more than he learned from me. "I can never forget the tears of colleague George Jose when recounting how Kartik moulded the St Xaviers group .Late Sebastion of CPDR classified Kartik as a true friend rather than just an activist.lok Shahi Hakk Sanghatana leader Vinod Shetty expressed his great moments in working with Kartik ending with tears in his eyes .Aavhan Natya Manch activist Robert narrated how dazzled he was with Kartik's meditative attention in adhering grievances of the Muslim community when trouble had simmered at a boiling point. during the communal riots in 1993 in Mumbai. Varavara Rao upheld Kartik’s role in the Kashmir fact finding report. Anthony Samy of Loksahahi Hakk Sanghatana praised Karthik’s perspective of advocating unity amongst civil liberties groups.

Assessment of Kartik

It was very rare to find a Student or youth of that time in Mumbai who was such a personification of revolutionary humanism, particularly in the upper middle class. In many ways his personality had overtones of Che Guevera. Kartik exuded that quality of 'love' so much required within a revolutionary and the spiritual aspect. Kartik was the embodiment of sensitivity within a human being.Kartik had great concern for fellow people and hated activists being turned into objects.

It was soul searching witnessing the manner he could de-condition or radicalize upper class students to bring them within the fold of democratic movements and he compassion he displayed when interacting with common workers.Kartik had deep insight into the psychology of people and would do just what he doctor ordered to inculcate a change within them. He refrained from parroting revolutionary jargon of Maoism but in almost congeal and lucid manner related politics to the students.

Notable that he did not look down on non -activists.Kartik was critical in the manner left activists were used not only by the revisionist parties but also the revolutionary groups, who he felt often gave crass respect to humanism and would convert cadres into pawns. This was noticeable in the manner cadre were pulled into rallies.

To the deepest core he opposed dogmatism, with his views akin to that of Che Guevera in important aspects. The splittism within the movement made him sick and he was determined to challenge all orthodox or conventional practices.

Kartik was an admirer of the C.P.I.(M.L)Peoples War group in Andhra Pradesh who he felt were genuinely resisting opression. However he was at considerable variance with the Leninist or Maoist concept of dictatorship of the Proletariat and questioned the vanguard role of the Party.Kartik upheld Che Guevera's concept of moral incentives and was harshly critical of the great purges of Stalin and some practices in he Chinese Cultural Revolution.Ofcourse I disagreed  with Kartik’s  stands on Lenin, Stalin and Mao which opposed the collectivist Leninist spirit .He also failed to grasp how the Peoples War group made major violations in massline practice or how tactics of Boycott in parliamentary elections was sectarian. In some ways his views were flawed with infections of the New Left and Trotskyite tendencies .Kartik credited Trotsky for the formation of the Red Army and upheld aspects of Guevarist foco theory.

At the end of it all perhaps I regret that I could not do what he did in his time but remember that nobody is infallible and I had virtues in other respects as a person. We had strong differences with considerably different personalities but still had considerable mutual respect.

India-50th Anniversary of Dalit Panther party tribute

By Harsh Thakor

MAY THE HISTORIC PATH BREAKING ACHIEVEMENTS OF DALIT PANTHER PARTY BE RESSURECTED

On May29th we celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Dalit Panther Party .Its formation was a landmark event in the post-1947 era of India defining a new epoch in the assertion of the dalit community. It was a manifestation of the rage simmering at a boiling point against their subjugation for centuries which hardly diluted after Independence. The Black Panther movement in America, the Naxalbari movement, and the Vietnam war crystallised the spirit of the Dalit community to confront fascist oppression. It fused Ambedkarist ideology with Marxism. For the first time a constructive manifesto was constructed for the political liberation of the Dalit Community. Many Dalits quit the Shiv Sena fold, which ruthlessly discriminated against them.

In spite of Garibi Hatao programme and a Socialist agenda price rise was soaring and economic misery intensifying. Reservations hardly generated any impact on the lives of the scheduled castes in any manner, who faced the worst brunt of impoverishment of the common man. They simply found no avenues to channelize their grievances through the parliamentary democratic system.Inspite of making promises no political party gave attention to the discrimination dalits faced in obtaining employment, in conditions at workplace, in educational institutions or even residences. Social boycott of dalits penetrated every walk of life.

Political consciousness sharpened at an unprecedented magnitude, with the dalit Community understanding the futility of the parliamentary reforms and functioning of the Social order and the agenda of Gandhism .It boosted the enthusiasm of dalits to study Marxism .Dalit cultural resurgence sprung with creation of dalit poetry, novels and paintings. The Dalits were inspired to wage armed resistance against Upper caste fascism on a scale untouched .It emulated the Black Panther Party of America in important ways.Dalits also displayed scorn for the traditional Marxist parties for literally placing caste agenda in the dustbin.

I thank references from Subhod More and Bernard De’ Mello for this article.

Genesis of Party

The Dalit Panthers was formed on July 9, 1972. India was preparing for grand celebrations to mark 25 years of Independence, but India’s Dalit youth were hyper, with the rage of cal burning in a furnace.

In 1967, the first non-Congress state governments had been formed. Political movements by youth were sprouting worldwide and in Maharashtra too, the Yuvak Kranti Dal had been formed. Dalits converted to Buddhism en masse in October 1956. On December 6 the same year, Babasaheb Ambedkar died. Between 1959 and 1964, a large land rights movement led by Dadasaheb Gaikwad, undertook struggles in Marathwada and Khandesh, and over 1 lakh people were imprisoned. In the late Sixties, The movement made it imperative for Chief Minister Y B Chavan to intensify reservation benefits to converted Buddhists too.

The Keelvenmani massacre in 1968 was a classic illustration of how inequality prevalent in the caste system enhanced the hegemony of class interests of exploiters. The landless dalits who were enslaved by the landlords in and around Tanjavur district, began demanding adequate wages under the leadership of the CPI(M) in the 1960s. When their demand for ‘half a measure of rice more for each sack of rice harvested’ was discarded, the Keelvenmani workers went on strike and withheld part of the harvest. Tensions aggravated between the unionists and the landlords. On 25 December, 1969 the landlords and their henchmen went to Keelvenmani in police trucks and started attacking the labourers and set fire to the hut in which many women, children, and the aged took shelter. A total of 44 of them were brutally murdered that night, including 5 aged men, 16 women and 23 children. This event made anger simmer at a boiling point in the hearts of the dalit community and was one precursors of the dalit panther movement.

Inspired by the Black Panthers movement for civil rights and against racism, writer-poets J V Pawar and Namdeo Dhasal decided to form the Dalit Panthers, and immediately called for a boycott of the 25th Independence Day revelry, calling it a ‘Black Independence Day’. Their anger was fuelled by recent atrocities perpetrated against Dalits — a Dalit woman paraded naked in Pune district and two Dalit men’s eyes gouged out in Dhakali village in Akola district.

The Dalit Panther manifesto not only defined dalits as Buddhist converts but also agricultural labourers, farmers, landlords, poor farmers etc.Nanded Dhasal asserted that not only caste system but also class system should be eradicated.

Left radicalism was in very blood of some of the young Dalit writers and poets, fused with indignation at the opportunistic tactics of the mainstream Dalit politicians of the Republican Party of India (RPI), co-opted as they were by the Congress Party. The mainstream communist parties, the CPI and the CPM, gave no vent to the inherent frustrations of the Dalits , this most deeply socially oppressed section of Indian society. Indeed, parliamentary democracy in a country like India, without the eradication of the caste system, and thus without a strata of people considered equal citizens, has been hypocritical. A potential reservoir for radical change was created by a chain of protests involving thousands of persons, confronting the menace of semi-feudalism. . The Panthers’ successful call for the boycott of a by-election to the Lok Sabha (the lower house of Parliament) from the constituency of Central Bombay in January 1974 shook the political establishment, at the very core. The RPI leadership, retaliated by suppressing  the Panthers wherever they were, its task greatly diluted by the Congress government-directed police force that left no stone unturned in smashing the base of the Dalit Panther Movement.

The Little Magazine movement, enabled dalit literature to flourish. Dr M N Wankhede published Asmita from Aurangabad; Baburao Bagul started Amhi (We) in Mumbai. These magazines gave birth to a galaxy of Dalit literary stars including Daya Pawar, Namdeo Dhasal, Arjun Dangle, Avinash Mahatekar and Raja Dhale. Dhasal’s Golpitha was published in 1971, with its down to earth language creating panic in conservative Marathi literary circles.

Founding member Raja Dhale wrote an essay in Sadhana magazine published from Pune, on the ‘Tirangaa’. If it couldn’t protect a Dalit woman’s dignity, it was only a rag, he wrote. Dhale faced a defamation case while the Dalit Panthers gained wide publicity. The Panthers would encompass villages where incidents of atrocities had been reported and shimmer the flame of rebellion.. In Mumbai, as they developed strongholds in Matunga Labour Camp, Naigaon-Dadar, Chembur, Ghatkopar, Sewri, Parel and Worli, they challenged the Shiv Sena nd Bal Thackera

Dhasal, Bagul and Dangle had clear Left leanings, but not everybody among the first generation Panthers saw eye-to-eye. When Dhasal released their manifesto, called Zahirnama, in 1972, Dhale retorted with a pamphlet saying it had a purely Communist agenda. It was a Namazahir, his pamphlet mocked. Bagul and Dangle’s Left leanings were honed by Annabhau Sathe who inaugurated the first Dalit Sahitya Sammelan in Maharashtra in 1958.

The Panthers also bore the influence of the Black Panthers. In fact, J V Pawar named his daughter Angela after Angela Davis. They began to establish links with civil rights groups worldwide and grew in stature. In 1974, the Worli riots took place after an event where Dhasal and Dhale were speakers. Those gathered faced repercussion of police repression; even policemen’s kids donned khaki uniforms and joined Shiv Sainiks in assaulting Dalits. Dhale was severely injured. On January 10, 1974, as a protest rally wound its way out of Bhoiwada, a large grinding stone was hurled from a building by Shiv Sainiks near Parel Railway workshop, and Bhagwat Jadhav died, the first Dalit Panther martyr.

In the mist of state wide turbulence women leaders including socialist Mrinal Gore, Comrade Ahilya Rangnekar, Comrade Tara Reddy and other Left parties gheraoed the old Vidhan Sabha at Kala Ghoda on the issue of PDS rations. . The Panthers invested every ounce of their energy in garnering support for this movement.

Moving beyond the arena emotive politics, the Dalit Panthers focused on economic issues and social justice. They were themselves all working-class people — Pawar and Mahatekar worked at banks, Dangle at the Bombay Port Trust, Prahlad Chendwankar at the docks. That’s also how their writing reflected the popular unrest even in their titles, such as Daya Pawar’s Kondwada (Blockades) or J V Pawar’s Nakebandi.

When the Dalit Panthers appealed for a boycott of the by-election to the Bombay Lok Sabha seat in 1974, Congress candidate Ramrao Adik lost, paying the price for taking Dalit votes for granted. Comrade Dange’s daughter Roza Deshpande won. While the Congress also began to label Dhasal a Leftist stooge, in reality, the Left supported the Dalit movement too. Comrade Satyendra More was a supporter of the Dalit Panthers, and when Dhasal was underground, he spent time at Comrade GL Reddy’s house.

But during the Emergency, Dhasal supported Indira Gandhi and a crisis developed within the Panthers. After the Nagpur conference in 1976, Dhale and J V Pawar left to form their own organisation ‘Mass Movement’. That defined the post-1976 or second stage of the Panthers.

As Dhasal lost clout after 1977, a new generation of leaders such as professor-orator Arun Kamble and Ramdas Athawale took charge, renaming it the Bharatiya Dalit Panthers. They helped the Panthers grow roots in every village. They found appeal among educated youth through their support of the Naamantar or resurrecting movement for Marathwada University. Thousands were arrested for protests demanding that the university be renamed after Ambedkar.

They found appeal among educated youth through their support of the Naamantar or resurrecting movement for Marathwada University. Thousands were arrested for protests demanding that the university be renamed after Ambedkar. Now, the Left-Ambedkar dichotomy was no longer an issue — the Naamantar movement was led by the Dalits, CPI, CPM, CPI-ML, Lal Nishaan and other socialist groups.

In 1988, Ramadas Athawale was made a minister by Sharad Pawar, and the Panthers was officially dissolved. Later attempts to form a united Republican Party were shortlived too.

In recent years, whether after the Khairlanji massacre or after Bhima Koreagaon the State’s strategy is to isolate the Dalit movement which has elements from the extreme Left, thus discouraging some youngsters from joining the Left.

Reasons for setback of Movement

A phenomenon to study is what propelled rank of dalit community to join hands with parties like Shiv Sena and Congress.

I also feel the movement exposed a weakness of not being able to forge  a link with the trade union struggles in urban areas like the Railway Workers Strike of 1974.

It also did not establish any relations with a genuine Revolutionary group. In my view absence of the vanguard Leninist party resulted in it’s demise. The chief cause for the reversal of Dalit Panthers in a Marxist party has been the failure of establishing a genuinely Revolutionary Communist Party or integrating with the working class movement.

Unlike the Black Panthers it was unable to launch armed resistance in any sustained manner or any proper alternative structures in any to day living like literacy, health, shelter etc. The Dalit panther leaders although inspired by Naxalbari failed to grasp Maoist ideology of peoples War and Cultural Revolution, like the Black Panther cadres .not linking itself with the politics of Naxalbari.

The chief cause for the reversal of Dalit Panthers in a Marxist party has been the failure of establishing a genuinely Revolutionary Communist Party or integrating with the working class movement.

Current Trends

In the last decades a major degeneration has taken within the dalit panthers with most of its constituents embracing ruling class electoral alliances. Some sections uphold Ambedkarism and a very minute section supports Marxism. The most progessive section, the ‘Republican panthers’ has done qualitative work in undertaking campaigns and protests condemning the Bhima Rao Koregaon arrests, and rebuking ideology of Brahmanical fascism. It patronised sections like the Kabir Kala Manch which hosted a series of cultural programmes all around Maharashtra and was influential in dalit basti areas. Impressive solidarity a programme was also initiated condemning Operation Greenhunt. In Tata Institute of Social Sciences very positive programmes were undertaken illustrating the content of Brahmanic fascism and its relation with a political economy that alienates the opressed castes. I was very deeply impressed by a 10000 people strong protest in Mumbai in February 2016 which symbolised resistance against opression at it's highest magnitude.

Earlier in 2004 an impressive campaign was launched by a dalit cultural youth front RADA in Mumbai condemning the death sentence on dalit agricultural workers in Bara in December 1991 and various other dalit massacres in Bihar of upper caste gangs like Lorik Sena and Bhoomi Sena or Rajputs in Laxmanpur Bather,,Shankrbiga etc...Analytically it linked the caste with the class question, with examples of uneven distribution of land and how land rights existed only on paper for the dalits. A study circle was organised on the role of Dalits in Independence Movement, highlighting how 1857 revolt gave their liberation no tacit support .Fascinatingly it also organized a 2 part study programme on the Chinese Revolution., delving particularly on the Chinese Revolution.

Near the airport slums of Ambedkar protesting land eviction by South African company G.V.K, a significant programme was launched In 2007 with the backing of the Jagrut Kamgar Manch, forging  a link with the birth centenary year of  Shaheed Bhagat Singh. Significant that the majority of participants were from the Dalit Community. In 2006 a most impactful protest was also launched of the dalit massacre in Khairlanj as well as in Ramabai nagar in 1997.

Commendable work was also undertaken by organisations like Vidhyarti Praghati Sanghatana and Naujwan Bharat Sabha challenging horrors like suicide of Activist Vilas Ghore.Even if differing with terroristic trends in their line we must praise the efforts of  leaders like Late Kondapalli Seetharmiah or even Maoist party in integrating caste question at the very core.

A number of former members of Marxist-Leninist groups intensively made an evaluation of how even Communist Revolutionary groups gave no heed to the caste question. Late Anuradha Gandhy wrote a dialectical documentO n annihilation of caste, which had a heart telling effect on many cadres. In recent times Anand Teltumbde Arundhati Roy ,Ajith(Murali)  and N.Venugopal and Professor G.N. Saibaba have too cut the very roots of caste oppression establishing how caste question  is an integral part of the Marxist Movement .I  recommend everyone to read Ajit’s book on Brahmanical fascism ,which most intrinsically traces the evolution of caste system and the dialectical link between class struggle and caste struggle.  Many Marxist groups now commemorate birth and death anniversary of Babasaheb Ambedkar. It is laudable that many dalits have even come out of the fold of traditional left parties to join ranks of anti-casteist organsations.

Even if it is my subjective view I feel that the democratic revolutionary camp is being swayed by the tide of Ambedkarism and failing to forge it's link with Marxism or class question. Instead of classifying Ambedkar as a social reformer they award him the tag of a Social Revolutionary. Historically even if Ambedkar was champion of dalit and human rights, he did not organise solidarity to Marxist movements or support strikes of Industrial workers or class struggles of the peasantry.

Quoting Anuradha Ghandy “Today, many of the present-day leaders of the Dalit movement go on a tirade against communists but see no harm in associating with such caste-ridden parties as the Congress (I) or BJP.  Why does this happen?  For two reasons.  Firstly, the traditional ‘communists’ (specifically the CPI and CPM) have not understood the caste question in India and have often taken a reactionary stand on the Dalit question.  Secondly, the established leadership of the present-day dalit movement do not seek a total smashing of the caste system, but only certain concessions within the existing caste structure.  It is primarily for these two reasons that the leadership of the present-day Dalit movement tends to take anti-communist positions.”

“As early as 1956 Dr. Ambedkar gave a speech at Katmandu comparing the ideas of Marxism and Buddhism.  In 1958, when Dadasaheb Gaikwad and Dadasaheb Rupavae split the RPI (Republican Party of India), the major criticism of Rupavate was that Gaikwad was a communist.  Again in 1974 when Raja Dhale and Namdev Dhasal split the Dalit Panthers the main accusation of Dhale was that Dhasal was a communist.  And later, Raosaheb Kasbe, Sharad Patil others have sought to link the views of Ambedkar and Marx’

“From a Marxist point of view what is significant is his objective role in the democratic transformation of society, whatever his shortcomings in approach towards class struggle.”

Ambedkar was responsible for planting the seeds to nurture Rights for dalits, crystallising many a social movement which confronted the debarring of dalits. In issues like drinking water, accomodation ,eating meals jointly. etc. Even if a social reformer he played a great historical role in making the dalit community socially conscious. Not a Marxist but laid the ground  for the dalits to atleast reach a democratic revolutionary platform. At the very root he exposed M.K. Gandhi’s pro –caste stand.

I had a word with former APRSU leader K.Srinivas   and Bhaskar Vishwnathan Muthu of the anti-fascist movement in Tamil Nadu who asserted that his role was truly laudable to arouse consciousness within dalit Community.

Some Marxist groups are still dogmatic in upholding his positive contribution.Ambedkar stitched the base of the civil rights movement of the untoucahables, which would eradicate untouchability and invoke the sympathy of the Hindus.Ambedkar mobilised the lowest castes in confronting caste oppression. He resurrected the soul of people, thrown into slavery for centuries, into establishing self –identity .His guidance made entire Mahar community convert to Buddhism.

Today we are missing clear cut Marxist evaluation of how to integrate caste question with Marxism within the CR camp. I recommend evaluations of caste question and Marxism by Arjun Prasad Singh in ‘Caste Question in India and the Paths of Its Resolution “in 2013 Arvind Memorial Seminar.

US- Another look at Memorial Day- "Whom Will We Honor Memorial Day?"

From Zin Education Project:

By Howard Zinn

Published on June 2, 1976 in the Boston Globe and republished in The Zinn Reader with the brief introduction below.

Memorial Day will be celebrated … by the usual betrayal of the dead, by the hypocritical patriotism of the politicians and contractors preparing for more wars, more graves to receive more flowers on future Memorial Days. The memory of the dead deserves a different dedication. To peace, to defiance of governments.

In 1974, I was invited by Tom Winship, the editor of the Boston Globe, who had been bold enough in 1971 to print part of the top secret Pentagon Papers on the history of the Vietnam War, to write a bi-weekly column for the op-ed page of the newspaper. I did that for about a year and a half. The column below appeared June 2, 1976, in connection with that year’s Memorial Day. After it appeared, my column was cancelled.

* * * * *

Memorial Day will be celebrated as usual, by high-speed collisions of automobiles and bodies strewn on highways and the sound of ambulance sirens throughout the land.

It will also be celebrated by the display of flags, the sound of bugles and drums, by parades and speeches and unthinking applause.

It will be celebrated by giant corporations, which make guns, bombs, fighter planes, aircraft carriers and an endless assortment of military junk and which await the $100 billion in contracts to be approved soon by Congress and the President.

There was a young woman in New Hampshire who refused to allow her husband, killed in Vietnam, to be given a military burial. She rejected the hollow ceremony ordered by those who sent him and 50,000 others to their deaths. Her courage should be cherished on Memorial Day. There were the B52 pilots who refused to fly those last vicious raids of Nixon’s and Kissinger’s war. Have any of the great universities, so quick to give honorary degrees to God-knows-whom, thought to honor those men at this Commencement time, on this Memorial Day?

No politician who voted funds for war, no business contractor for the military, no general who ordered young men into battle, no FBI man who spied on anti-war activities, should be invited to public ceremonies on this sacred day. Let the dead of past wars be honored. Let those who live pledge themselves never to embark on mass slaughter again.

“The shell had his number on it. The blood ran into the ground…Where his chest ought to have been they pinned the Congressional Medal, the DSC, the Medaille Militaire, the Belgian Croix de Guerre, the Italian gold medal, The Vitutea Militara sent by Queen Marie of Rumania. All the Washingtonians brought flowers .. Woodrow Wilson brought a bouquet of poppies.”

USA-Our culture of guns have given us gun violence

 By Steve Otto

One more whack job shoots up a school in Texas and finally some people are beginning to rebel against the Republican Party's expansion of gun rights. Some people are calling for background checks.

People are starting to call for some kind of gun control. As a Marxist I have always opposed banning guns. I have opposed a lot of the ideas that a lot of liberals propose and support. But the Republican Party has taken gun right to an absurd level. Over the last 15 years, we have seen nearly all states making it legal to carry and conceal guns. We have "stand your ground" laws that make it easy for someone to shoot and kill a person for frivolous reasons. Some states have lowered the age for the right to carry a pistol from the age of 21 to 18. This latest shooter was 18. Some of the other shooters were 18. Has anyone noticed that maybe letting 18 year olds buy and own assault weapons and pistol just might not be a good idea?

Some states have tried to make it legal to carry a gun in a bar. Does anyone else this is a move of major stupidity?

Every time there is a shooting the NRA[1] keeps saying that we need more guns in more people's hands—for example- they want to arm teachers with handguns.

The majority of people want some restrictions on guns. Few seem to notice that the NRA and Republicans (usually the same people) are making it easier and easier for people of all kinds to get, have and carry guns. No one wants to point out that along with more guns in society, we also have more gun violence. It seems as if we have been having mindless and random shootings of people in grade, middle and high schools and public places in general. We have such a shooting almost every week. It's getting ridiculous. It should not be so easy for an 18 year old to buy an assault weapon or pistols.

More guns have brought us more gun violence. That should not surprise anyone.

Opioid crisis—Conservative Kansas law makers care more about controlling morality than saving lives

From The Idiot Factor:

Once again we see the paranoia of anti-drug Kansas conservatives. The latest fiasco is the Kansas legislators refusing to lift a ban on strips that would allow a person to test recreational drugs for fentanyl. According to Kansas Reflector:

"Hutchinson Rep. Jason Probst pleaded with legislative colleagues Sunday to repeal a 41-year-old state statute defining test strips as drug paraphernalia to enable Kansans to more easily test illegal drugs for presence of fentanyl that has fueled a wave of overdose deaths.

The 2022 Legislature returns to Topeka on Monday for what typically amounted to a brief ceremonial gathering to close out the annual session. There is potential, however, the Republican-led House and Senate could be interested in taking up tax or transportation legislation, which could open the door to a longer day and consideration of other issues.

In April before the Legislature took a long break, the Kansas Senate blocked a bill decriminalizing fentanyl test strips. Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid 100 times stronger than morphine. Dealers can be blend it with heroin, cocaine or methamphetamine, but consumers of those drugs can’t visually discern contents of those substances."

Fentanyl is an extremely dangerous synthetic narcotic. The Kansas Department of Health Environment pointed to 338 overdose deaths in this state from Jan. 1, through June 30, of 2021. They estimated that 149 were linked to fentanyl. That is a 54% rise in overdose deaths from a similar period in 2020.

In my opinion that drug is responsible for the majority of opioid deaths since the so called “opioid crises” began.

For years now, politicians and the mainstream press have attacked all opioid drugs and have accused drug dealers (legal and illegal) of all-out murder. We keep hearing all the statistics of large amounts of deaths attributed to opioids.

I for one have suggested that people who use drugs like that should have some degree of freedom of choice over how they live their lives. There are people who use narcotics for pain relief and at times, self medication for a number of illnesses of both of physical and psychological needs. We don’t need the government to tell us what we can and can’t do in the privacy of our own homes.

Opioids have been around for most of my life time. There have always been some deaths attributed to their use—especially heroin. But the death statistics today seem much higher than in more recent years. The one element that seems to make sense is that fentalyn is much stronger and more dangerous than heroin or any other opioid. Fentalyn is 100 times stronger than heroin. It only takes a tiny pinch of pure heroin to get a person high and just a little more than that to kill a first time user. A fentalyn dose is as small is just two grains of salt. Normally, on the black market, both drugs are diluted by their dealers. It is hard to mix and dilute a drug like Fentalyn, since it takes so little to kill a person.

One problem with Fentalyn is that it is sold legally in hospitals for use to kill pain. Heroin, on the other hand, can’t be sold legally under any circumstances, even though it is the safer drug.

Several years ago, there were people proposing that addicts be given clean needles to stop such diseases as AIDS.[1] Conservatives blocked it and even admitted that they would rather see addicts die rather than take drugs. For a lot of us, such a sentiment is unthinkable and just plane cruel. People with a drug problem, or those who self medicate, don’t deserve the death penalty.

Kansas Reflector provided this example of such an opinion by a Kansas Senator:

"Sen. Kelli Warren, a Leawood Republican seeking the GOP nomination for attorney general, said passage of the bill could appear as if Kansas was creating a haven for consumption of illicit drugs. She said people should take personal accountability and shouldn’t take illegal drugs."

She is one of those who would rather see an drug user die than get high. Those who hold such views are no better than Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte who has made the murder of drug users not only legal but a national policy. Surely we can do better than that.

Those strips do not make it easier to use hard drugs. They can save a lot of people’s lives. It is about time we start focusing on saving people’s lives rather than trying to control personal morality.

America does not need a form of fascism to control drug epidemics. It is time to get rid of those out-dated and destructive laws that are part of our capitalist society.  This attitude helps prevent us from achieving a much freer society.

LONG LIVE THE 42nd ANNIVERSARY OF THE PEOPLE'S WAR!

From the blog of Communist Party of Ecuador, Red Sun / Partido Comunista del Ecuador - Sol Rojo:        To read this in Spanish  click here.

STATEMENT

-Popular Movement Peru, body created by the Party for work abroad-

Today we celebrate, full of enthusiasm and with the utmost revolutionary optimism, the 42nd anniversary of the start of the People's War in Peru (ILA 80), headed by the Communist Party of Peru (PCP) under the leadership of Chairman Gonzalo, leader of the Communist Party of Peru. and of the revolution.

Last year, on September 11, 2021, Chairman Gonzalo offered his life for the Party and the revolution in the highest combat trench of the people's war, his brave example demonstrates the mettle of a great communist leader, the greatest Marxist-Leninist-Maoist of the present time, teacher of communists, successor of Marx, Lenin and Chairman Mao Tsetung, center of unification of the Party and guarantee of victory that will lead us to communism. As he always taught to carry life at the tips of his fingers, Chairman Gonzalo, in more than 29 years of fierce combat in the most absolute isolation and under torture, until his last breath he faced his executioners with his fist raised defying death by unfading Marxism-Leninism. -Maoism, for the PCP and the BUP, for the people's war and the world proletarian revolution. With sure and iron faith in the cause of communism he gave his precious blood for what he believed. This is a great deed of the people's war. It shows that the people's war in Peru, far from ending, rises up and calls us to once again inflame our entire geography.

With his heroic and defiant death, Chairman Gonzalo defeated the plans of imperialism, reaction and revisionism to deal him the final blow as part of the counterrevolutionary plan to annihilate the people's war and obtained a great political, military and moral victory for the party and the village. people's war, the international proletariat and the peoples of the world. They tried to present him as a capitulationist and revisionist, as a renegade head of the ROL rats, they tried to make him say that his almighty Gonzalo Thought was no longer valid, they tried to make him resign from the I Marxist Congress, Marxist-Leninist-Maoist, Gonzalo Thought of Maoism , the program and the BUP with its center the military line. But he remained firm and defiant and continued to fight hard and sacrificially for the Peruvian and world revolution until the end,  showing that the people's war in Peru has not stopped for a single moment because the life of the Party never ceases. Demonstrating the invincibility of the people's war.

The Yankee imperialism headed by Biden, the Peruvian reaction headed by the president, the opportunist counterrevolutionary rondórondero Pedro Castillo Terrones and the revisionism headed by the rat “Miriam”, head of the opportunist, revisionist and right-wing capitalist line (LOD), have harvested a miserable defeat that plunges them into further crisis and decomposition. The old landed bureaucratic state at the service of imperialism, mainly Yankee imperialism, is going through the greatest crisis of its 200-year history, only to be swept away by the people's war.

The masses fight, denounce and reject the reactionary government headed by opportunism and supported by its blackest conspiracy against the people with all the other reactionary parties. This is what the analysts of the reaction have pointed out, saying that the Castillo government is the product of the social and political decomposition that surrounds the State itself and that it is maintained because nobody is interested in removing it, that is, there is greater collusion and struggle between the two reactionary fractions and their groups and the unwary that represent them, contrary to what the opportunists and revisionists say, there is a super coexistence in parliament between Fujimorism and anti-Fujimorism, which explains why Castillo remains in government and most scandalous laws that have been approved by common consent. That is the "popular" government that the ROL defends and its demand for a new constitution is that it serve to restructure the old state to reimpose bureaucratic capitalism and annihilate the people's war, the dreams of hyenas like their imperialist and reactionary masters. The masses need the people's war, it is the only way for their liberation from centuries of oppression and exploitation. The masses demand the leadership of the PCP.

On this occasion we reiterate our greetings and reaffirm our full and unconditional submission to our almighty ideology, Marxism-Leninism-Maoism, Gonzalo Thought, mainly to Gonzalo Thought, the solid foundation of its leadership, and to our heroic fighter, the Communist Party. from Peru, to its entire management system; to all the facts, documents and partisan agreements, to the First Congress, Marxist Congress, Marxist-Leninist-Maoist Congress, Gonzalo Thought, imperishable milestone of the victory achieved in the heat of the People's War, which laid the foundations of the Unity Party: Marxism- Leninism-Maoism, Gonzalo Thought, Program and General Political Line with its center the Military Line. Likewise, to the historic and transcendental Third Plenary Session and its masterful synthesis, the Speech of Our Headquarters,

Our commitment to give our lives to defend the direction of Chairman Gonzalo and his almighty Gonzalo Thought to serve the fulfillment of the task of the General Reorganization of the Party.

We express our greetings to the militants, fighters and masses of the Communist Party of Peru. Our greetings to the People's Liberation Army and the New Power.

Express our greetings to the international proletariat and the peoples of the world. To the international communist movement and the Parties and Organizations that, embodying Maoism, struggle to make it the sole command and guide of the new great wave of the world proletarian revolution in the stage of its strategic offensive and sweep of imperialism and reaction from the face of the earth through people's war. When, as an expression of all of the above, more and more masses rise up everywhere and express great activity ready to rebel, it indicates that we are entering a new period of revolutions. The objective and subjective conditions for revolution have become much more favorable throughout the world. This determines the tasks and tactics of the communists in our country and in the world.

We salute the revolution as the main historical and political current in the world. To the next Unified Maoist International Conference to give birth to the New International Organization of the Proletariat as an important step in the reunification of the international communist movement in a new International product of the development of the people's war on the planet.

We salute the 50th anniversary of the founding of the TKP/ML, by its great leader Ibrahim Kaypakaya, and the people's war that he leads.

We express our deep class hatred against the new revisionism led by the damn rats of the ROL in the country as well as in the world, which serves the general counterrevolutionary offensive led by US imperialism as the only hegemonic superpower, the main enemy of the peoples. of the world and the world counterrevolutionary gendarme in collusion and struggle with the atomic superpower Russia and other imperialist powers.

Down with the war of aggression of Russian imperialism against Ukraine! Down with Yankee imperialism, the main enemy of the peoples of the world! People's War to Communism!

“Before the people's war, everything has been tried here, elections, stealth electoralism, to the point of boredom, to the point of boredom (…) We have seen uprisings in the city that prove that this is not the way to go; We have seen how the peasantry has many times shaken the depths of this country, but we had not tried the only path, the true path, the path of people's war. It is that path that we dared to take; then we were a handful, compared to today, although we were perhaps as many as the fingers of our hands that insisted on defending the Party. As Chairman Mao told us: “the problem is not how many, the problem is whether you want to or not”. And we have wanted, we want and we will want the people's war; no one will get us out of there, with the seizure of power as a principle. That's how it will be, time more, time less,  and the time for this conquest has already begun to run, it seems that it was not like that, but if we delve into things, it is like that; but the people's war will continue to accompany us, because with it we will defend the new State and with it we will set fire to the parts of the world that are still imprisoned and we will not stop until we see the partisan legions of iron converge in a sea of red, armed, that it ripples over the earth, shakes it and shakes it and turns it upside down. So shall it be."  the iron legions converge in a red, armored sea that ripples over the land, shakes and churns it and turns it upside down.  So shall it be." the iron legions converge in a red, armored sea that ripples over the land, shakes and churns it and turns it upside down. So shall."

The heroic and victorious surrender of his own life by Chairman Gonzalo to impose Maoism as the sole command and guide of the world proletarian revolution, the Party, the people's war and the triumph of the democratic revolution in our country as part of and at the service of of the world proletarian revolution leads us to understand more deeply the need to serve to culminate the General Reorganization of the Party in and for the people's war, inseparably and irreconcilably fighting imperialism, reaction and revisionism, mainly the new revisionism led by the ROL.

It is up to us to cling firmly to the leadership of Chairman Gonzalo and his almighty Gonzalo Thought and implement the plans to complete the general reorganization of the Party. The history of the Party shows that when Marxism is abandoned due to the treacherous action of revisionism, what must be done to get out of the ups and downs is to firmly retake Marxism, today Marxism-Leninism-Maoism, Gonzalo Thought, and in this way we will necessarily overcome the bend and the inflection and the people's war will make the leap towards the conquest of power throughout the country.

LONG LIVE THE 42nd ANNIVERSARY OF THE PEOPLE'S WAR!
