Update on Nepal

This is an update on the continuing turmoil going on in Nepal as the United Communist Party of Nepal – Maoist and the more conservative parties continue to look for a way out of the political stalemate that took place when the UCPN-M resigned from the government more than a year ago. Here are two sources of information one the revolutionary struggle taking place. The CPN-UML (Communist Party Nepal United Marxist Leninist) is a much more conservative party than the UCPN-M and are opponents rather than allies at this point.

UML will not claim leadership of new government: Khanal

CPN-UML Chairman Jhala Nath Khanal on Wednesday made it clear that his party will not stake claim to the leadership of the new government after confirming that Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal will tender his resignation following his address to the nation today.Khanal also trashed rumors that he is all set to become the new prime minister of the country.Emerging from the standing committee meeting of the party held at its central office in Balkhu, he said PM Nepal, who is also a senior CPN-UML leader, had told the party leaders during the meeting today that he will step down in order to put an end to the deepening political crisis. The UML strongman reiterated the need for national consensus for peace and constitution.

Political ads—where are our choices when everyone says the same thing?

Political ads are now in full swing. Here in Kansas, the politicians with all the money are conservative and they all say the exact same thing. “I’ll fight for conservative values.” “I’m a conservative outsider,” “I never voted for a tax increase,” “I’m pro-life.”
Out political system is winner takes all. What would help our elections would be some kind of proportional representation. That kind of system is found mostly in Europe and it allows minority parties and viewpoints to have at least some representation in the government.
Kansas is much like the rest of the country. Each election has one and only one winner and that person must win the majority to hold office. There is no second place, no consolation prize or anything from those who disagree with the direction of the ruling party, which in Kansas is ALLWAYS REPUBLICAN. The first district is so solidly Republican that the Democratic Party has literally pulled out of that part of the state. The Libertarian Party is the only real competition to the Republicans in that part of Kansas.
The Democratic Party has a hard time raising money in Kansas so we are bombarded with the same message and the same promises. We also have a lot of pure stupidity of campaign claims. One day we were bombarded with Wink Hartman ads where Hartman holds a certificate he said was a pledge not to indulge in dirty campaign tactics. He pledged to stick to the issues and not sling mud at his opponents. Now he has been running an ad all day blasting his opponent, Mike Pompeo claiming he sent Kansas jobs to Mexico and implying he is a Washington insider. Do any of the voters remember the pledge? Even if they do, who are they going to vote for since every campaign ad is saying the same thing? Can any of these people be trusted?
Kansas is a lot like living in a one party state. Election campaigns are becoming more meaningless every day.

G20 anarchists clash with police

It is sad to admit that the anarchists who raised havoc at the G20 summit, in recent days, were the ones who got the attention of the press. There will be some leftist and groups who will denounce or even condemn the violent actions of the anarchists. But how much press will these non-violent people get?
When it comes to press coverage, actions speak louder than words. So the black bloc tactics of the anarchists will get the attention they seek, while the placid law abiding groups get ignored.
It is my opinion that anarchists’ beliefs can’t lead to a successful revolution, but they can disrupt and setback the capitalist agenda’s of the worlds captains of industry and their politicians. It is other groups, that are more organized and more experienced at the game of politics who may actually benefit from the actions of these anarchists.
On one had they may accomplish their goal of disruption of the G20 summit and yet they are unlikely to win much for their own agenda.
So they may be successful in one aspect of their actions, while not succeeding at the overall agenda of building an anarchist revolution. There may be change coming, but they won’t be group that benefits from it. -សតិវ អតុ

Police say anarchists unleashed mayhem at summits

TORONTO — Despite a whopping $900 million security budget for the G-summits in Canada over the weekend, the streets of Toronto were swarmed by an angry mass of black-clad anarchists who wreaked havoc, leaving a trail of destruction.
A protest organized mainly by labor groups Saturday began as an upbeat rally over global causes, ranging from anti-poverty issues to anti-globalization to anti-war. Then, without warning, the protest was infiltrated by a group of mainly young men and women who went on a rampage, smashing storefront windows with baseball bats, torching four police cruisers and prompting police to fire tear gas for the first time ever in the Toronto Police force's history.
When it ended, more than 900 people had been arrested, the largest mass arrests Canada has ever seen, and police Monday were still looking for the instigators of the widespread wreckage.
In the aftermath, many are asking how a country that has a universal reputation as the nice guys, whose lexicon is filled with please and thank yous, who don't start the wars, but support the troops, could have erupted in such violence and chaos.

More on the 60th anniversary of the Korean (한국) War

The week was the 60th anniversary of the Korean War. The last few weeks I’ve posted a few articles on the Korean situation. According to The Wichita Eagle, most Koreans don’t worry about the North invading them:

When 46 South Korean sailors died in March in what the South charges was a North Korean torpedo attack on the Cheonan, a naval warship, people in Seoul mourned, but there weren't huge demonstrations across the country, much less panic. After South Korea said it would seek United Nations sanctions, and Pyongyang swore retribution, analysts called it one of the lowest points in Korean relations since the war. Many South Koreans just shook their heads.
"It's not something I take seriously," said Choi Song-gu, a 65-year-old real estate agent who was visiting the observation platform on the DMZ with friends.
Choi said he wasn't worried that the DMZ, a ribbon of heavily mined land that cleaves the nation with thousands of soldiers on either side, is less than 30 miles from Seoul. While there are no exact figures for the North Korean arsenal of missilhe Southern capital off the face of the Earth.
"I don't believe that North Korea is a threat," he said. "I read the articles in the newspapers, but I don't buy it."
es and artillery, the country has more than enough firepower to wipe tAfter 60 years of one of the bloodiest wars the US had fought since World War II, there doesn’t seem to be the same fears of invasion on the Korean Peninsula today.

That was just the locals. Although the war was technically a UN effort, the real losses went to

With all those dead and wounded, it is hard to imagine that people in Korea don’t fear a return to such a bloodbath. At one time, South Korea was nearly wiped out. Then the US came in and the North was nearly wiped out. Then the Chinese came in. After more than two years of bloody conflict the war ended close to where it started.
Maybe that is why people are confident the war won’t be repeated. Neither sides wants the deaths and destruction that came with the Korean War. And if that is the case, it is a good thing.

Some thoughts on the 60th anniversary of the Korean (한국) War

The Wichita Eagle article continues the same tired old cold war propaganda tirades:

As the 60th anniversary of the beginning of the Korean War comes today, the Korean Peninsula remains in limbo. To the south of the DMZ is a modern, democratic state, while to the north is a totalitarian regime that let as many as 2 million people die of famine in the 1990s rather than open itself to the world.

Naturally there are some other views on the Korean War. From the Kasama Project:

Sixty years ago, the U.S. army continued to occupy southern Korea, five long years after Japan had been defeated. It was clear to the whole world that the U.S. did not intend to leave Korea, but had instituted its own colonial occupation in the place of the Japanese. And it was also clear that this forward basing of U.S. troops was intended as a foothold on the mainland of Asia — a military threat to the new revolution in China.
On June 25, 1950, war broke out on the Korean peninsula as newly formed armies of the Democratic Peoples Republic of Korea engaged and drove back the U.S. occupiers. A bitter three-year war had started.
This is the story about a historic and unprecedented U.S. defeat — the first direct confrontation between a triumphant U.S. imperialism and the new revolutionary forces they were fighting to contain.

DPRK Committees Release Joint Statement on 60 Years after Korean War
Pyongyang, June 24 (KCNA) -- The Central Committee of the Democratic Front for the Reunification of Korea, the National Peace Committee of Korea and the North Headquarters of the Nationwide Special Committee for Probing the Truth behind the GIs' Crimes made public a joint statement on June 24 as regards the lapse of six decades since the U.S. imperialists provoked the Korean War.
The statement said that the last Korean War was an aggression war ignited by the U.S. with its satellite countries and south Korea to stifle the young DPRK in its cradle and realize its wild ambition for world domination. It was also a war of massacre against the Korean nation unprecedented in the world history of wars, it noted, and went on:
During the war the U.S. imperialist ogres used even germ and chemical weapons against the Korean people in wanton violation of international law and even hatched a plot to drop an atomic bomb.
Due to the shuddering brutalities of the U.S. imperialists and the south Korean puppet forces, millions of innocent people met death and the whole territory of the northern half of Korea turned into such debris during the war that not a single house and a full brick could be found.
Branding the U.S. imperialists as blood-thirsty murderers, heinous war fanatics and aggressors without parallel, the statement further said:
More than half a century has passed since the U.S. imperialists signed the Korean Armistice Agreement, with their knees bent before the army and people of the DPRK. But the U.S. has not only committed vicious moves to provoke a new war but desperately stood in the way of improving the inter-Korean relations and achieving reunification while interfering in the internal affairs of the Korean nation and disturbing the process for improving relations even after the war.

Patriot Act is unpatriotic

Since 9/11, The US has pushed for extremely repressive, anti-freedom and anti-democratic acts, under the label “The Patriot Act.” Now the Supreme Court has upheld the George Bush government’s attack on international political connections, according to Kasama Project . Seriously repressive government moves, launched in the name of anti-terrorism, criminalize “material support” for groups on the government’s terrorists lists. Now the Supreme Court has upheld this dangerous policy.
This act is a direct violation of freedom of speech. For example, one of these acts allows the government to arrest people for expressing support for organizations that our elected leaders have listed on a “terrorists” list. The problem with this list is that it is up to government officials to decide who is a terrorist and who is not lacking any clear cut guidelines or definitions. With the exception of Al-Qaeda who has actually attack the US directly, most groups are simply armed parties or militias that simply disagree with our government’s foreign policy.
No pro-life group has actually been added to this list even though such groups as the Army of God have aided and encouraged attacks on American citizens. On the other hand, groups that have not attacked any Americans who have given up armed actions and actually won elections, such as The Unified Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist) remain listed as a terrorist group.
And how do they decide who a terrorist is? It is entirely up to them. Any government or foreign organization they are at odds with the US can be labelled “terrorist” and those who might sympathies or agree with them can be put in jail for supporting terrorists.
Some other problems with this act are the definition of “material support.” This has been radically widened (both by government assertion, and now by Supreme Court decision). Material support could include offering such groups “expert” advice (possible examples: sharing simple advice on law, on translation, on websites). Again, there are no clear guidelines on what makes a person supportive of terrorism.
There are a number of reasons a person might sympathize with a political party from another part of the world. They may have ethnic roots, such as a person with parents still living in the Gaza. Hamas has been labelled a terrorist group and yet it has won an election and is the recognized leadership of the Gaza.
Some people may have political sympathies with parties such as the communist parties in Nepal. These parties pose no threat to the US at all. They have never made any threats against the US and want only to improve conditions in Nepal.
So far the law has been used against people who have had connections to Islamic persons, such as Faisal Shahzad who tried to set off a bomb in Time Square. However, there is nothing to stop our government officials from using torture on people who may simply know Shahzad, but have no knowledge of what he was planning to do. Some Muslems have already been interrogated simply for their religious beliefs.
While this has not been a problem for the majority of the population, things could change for the worse. If the war in Afghanistan goes badly, this act could be used as a tool against legitimate opposition. Such arrests were made at the Republican convention in Minnesota in August of 2008. Such politically motivated arrests are a violation of the US constitution and no “act,” patriotic or otherwise, can legitimately over-ride our constitution.
There is nothing patriotic about the Patriot Act.

Anti-Imperialism—a 5th International and a united front?

Perhaps it was the influence of Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez that inspired the Workers World Party, Fight Imperialism, and Stand Together (FIST) to put together an anti-imperialist statement. Because in that statement they mention Chávez:

“Something important happened last November that did not seem to elicit the widespread interest that it should have. In a speech to a large gathering in Caracas, Venezuela, of communist, socialist and left parties, and social movements from around the region and the world, Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez made a call for a new Fifth International of socialists and communists.
Chávez said the Fifth International must be “an instrument for the unification and articulation of the struggle of the peoples to save this planet.”

Even for a successful leader as Chávez who has several allies in Latin America, including Fidel Castro, to set up a serious fifth International and take on the US, the only real empire in the world today and vastly militarily superior to all its rivals combined, this is an ambitious project. He talks of a coalition of communists, socialists and other left parties. To overcome years of factionalism, this is also ambitious. Or it could all be more symbolism over action. Such an international could create economic alliances and inspiration for such parties as the US Workers World Party and its allies here in the US.
The statement released by Workers World, Fight Imperialism, and (FIST) shows that they are serious about launching such a coalition.

Much of what is in this statement is pretty straight forward:
*NO RELIANCE ON THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY.
* SOLIDARITY WITH OPPRESSED PEOPLES — SUPPORT THE RIGHT TO SELF-DETERMINATION.
* ANTI-IMPERIALISM & INTERNATIONALISM
* CENTRALITY OF THE WORKING CLASS
It all looks good. The US Democratic and Republican Party are completely united in support of the US Empire. Imperialism is a major part of US capitalism. The US relies heavy on it and has dedicated much of the countries resources, including human, financial, technological and politics, to preserving it.
It is easy to agree on what we appose. We all agree there are no good wars being fought by the US. The Democratic Party will not help us. But under the banner

* ANTI-IMPERIALISM & INTERNATIONALISM it reads:

“These should be high on the list of unifying principles. U.S. imperialism does not wage some bad wars and some good wars. All imperialist wars and occupations are for imperialist interests. The greater this understanding, the stronger the movement will be.
A NEW socialist unity must strengthen internationalism. Workers, the oppressed and poor people everywhere must know that they have steadfast class allies in the U.S. Internationalism means the defense of revolutionary governments like Cuba and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea. It also means support for national liberation struggles, such as the Palestinian people, and all who are fighting imperialism — from Haiti to Venezuela and Bolivia; from Iraq to Afghanistan, Iran, Africa to the Philippines.”

There are a lot of enemies of the US who don’t support the interests of a modern communist movement. The best example is Iran. There is a revolutionary movement of Maoist there, the Communist Party of Iran (Marxist-Leninist-Maoist)
who I think many of us want to support. But we don’t want to take part in any of the belligerent activities of the US in its effort to replace a backward theocracy with a phoney US style “democracy,” as we have seen in Iraq and Afghanistan.
We need a united front against US imperialism, but how do we take part when there are political parties who (at least in the past) have supported the Islamic government in Iran? We can’t turn our backs on the Maoist movement there. Yet we can’t be supportive of the constant barrage of attacks by the US.

Mike Ely of the Kasama Project wrote a critique of the statement. It said:

“But reducing imperialism to those acts (and thinking that opposing particular imperialist actions is inherently “anti-imperialism”) kinda misses an important point: It leaves out the revolution, and leaves out the internationalist interconnection of revolutionary movements. It negates our responsibility to expose and oppose imperialism as a system — and to see ourselves in internationalist solidarity with those doing so globally.
It waters down anti-imperialist until it means little more than anti-intervention.”

One area of contention is that of which countries are revolutionary, communist, socialist and deserving of our support. He goes on to say:

“Anti-U.S. does not equal Anti-Imperialist
There are long lists of class forces and political institutions that oppose the U.S. but are themselves far from anti-imperialist. In fact some of them ARE imperialist — in their own right.”

In places such as Gaza, we have a situation where Hamas won a western style election and neither the US nor Israel is willing to accept the election results. This opens up the opportunity to show the emptiness of US style democracy if the imperialist US can’t abide by its own rules. I don’t support Hamas and consider them reactionary and yet they have a right to rule as long as the people there have chosen them.
These are difficult contradictions of being a Communist Revolutionary. We can support other minor parties in the Gaza. We can refuse to support Hamas on principles. But we don’t have a lot of realistic options there that satisfy our aim of opposing US imperialist policies and supporting communist revolution.
North Korea has fought an anti-imperialist war directly against the US and it was reluctantly supported by Mao’s China. I think there is nothing revolutionary or anti-imperialist in supporting China today, but how can we not support the socialist government of the DPR of North Korea’s right to exist. The same can be said of Cuba. As Maoists we don’t endorse them as a true socialist model that we would encourage others to emulate. But they have a right to exist and allowing the US to destroy these governments would be a great victory for US imperialism. The main danger in supporting any third world country that suppresses dissent is if that country falls, as Albania did, and the opposition is stronger than any of us anticipated.
If Chávez can start an international that gives room to the communist revolutionaries, it may provide us some breathing room and a stage to promote real revolution. We may be able to work with the Workers World Party on some issues, but maybe not all. That may be as good as a united front gets and it’s probably better than nothing.

Republicans still in the pocket of Big Oil

At a time when people are fed up with the destruction brought on by the reclessness of BP, it is clear that the same republicans that talk of cleaning up all the corruption in Washington are clearly in the pockets of big oil. The following information is from Jon Vogel, DCCC Executive Director, of the Democratic Party:

While President Obama was securing funds from BP to pay for the damage their oil spill is wrecking on families in the Gulf, Republicans apologized... to BP.Yes, Texas Congressman Joe Barton actually apologized to BP CEO Tony Hayward and called it "a tragedy in the first proportion that a private corporation can be subjected to what I would characterize as a shakedown." That's right - Republicans think the "tragedy" is that BP will have to pay victims of their disaster.This isn't from some backbencher. Republicans want to put Congressman Barton in charge of the entire Energy and Commerce committee!With our June 30th FEC reporting deadline fast approaching, now is the time to send an overwhelming message that grassroots Democrats will not stand by as Republicans shamelessly shill for their Big Oil backers. The national media will use our grassroots totals to judge our will to fight against the Grand Oil Party.

Barton's not alone. Republican Congresswoman Michele Bachmann called it a "redistribution of wealth fund." The Republican Study Committee called it "Chicago-style politics." Even now, Republican Leader John Boehner refuses to sign on to House Democrats' legislation lifting the liability cap on BP.There is simply no excuse for refusing to hold BP accountable for the environmental disaster in the Gulf - and it is an environmental disaster, despite what Alaska Congressman Don Young claims.It's clear that Republicans are counting on their corporate special interests like Big Oil to fuel them to what they hope will be a record breaking fundraising quarter -- but this is a disgusting new low. Don't let Big Oil's backers claim the momentum.

Some truth about South (Republic of) Korea

Last week I posted an article “Why we must oppose aggression against the DPR (North) Korea” and while I’m sure those with an international and anti-imperialist outlook can understand that position, I noticed a lot of hostility against the DPRK from common Americans when I posted it at a more mainstream site. We did fight a war with them, so to some vets and jingoists, it’s not hard to see why they feel so strongly against the government in Korea’s North. But there are a few progressives who keep raising the issue of human rights. “How can we support a government which we all know imprisons people under harsh conditions and controls what people can watch for news or entertainment.
However, a few facts about the South (Republic of) Korean government need to be remembered. This government is almost entirely US made. It did not exist until the US, under President Harry Truman, came up with the idea that we could bolster a rightwing leader in the south and then try to roll back the indigenous government in the North. The Kim Il Sung government came from a real anti-Japanese coalition of parties that set out to remove all foreigners from Korea’s soil. When the US started to prop up a puppet government in the South, Kim decided the US was just one more imperialist power that had to be dealt with. All this information is contained in an article by Bruce Cumings who added it to a text book, America Interpreted, by Randall Woods and Willard Gatewood.[1]
Another important point is that South Korea’s human rights record is not that much better than the North. They have imprisoned people for speaking out against the regime. They have reacted violently to protest by students and others who oppose their repressive nature. Their elections allow only certain parties to participate. The country has improved in recent years, but for far to long South Korea has been a capitalist dictatorship.

The Kwangju Uprising and US-Sanctioned Massacre

“In Kwangju and other nearby towns in the Cholla region, the rebellion ushered in a week of collective sharing and citizen solidarity that some activists and historians later compared to the Paris Commune of 1871.”
“The Carter administration, concerned that the crisis in South Korea could destabilize U.S. security interests and possibly trigger “another Iran” — a revolution overthrowing a U.S. ally — gave tacit approval to the Korean military to use force to put down student and worker protests, while warning generals not to use excessive force. Then, when the Kwangju citizens fought back against military atrocities, the same officials approved the dispatch of Korean troops under U.S. command to put down the rebellion. Carter’s actions helped pave the way for nearly eight more years of repressive military rule in South Korea and triggered a wave of anti-American feeling throughout South Korea that persists to this day.”

The Lasting Significance of Kwangju

Last week marked the 30th anniversary of the Kwangju Citizens’ Uprising in South Korea, a pivotal event that inspired the Korean democratic movement through its ultimate victory in the late 1980s. In Kwangju, where hundreds died in the uprising, the event was marked by solemn remembrances and the presence of political leaders from both left and right, including representatives of President Lee Myung-bak, South Korea’s most conservative leader in over a decade. But the event drew hardly a passing glance in the United States, which is South Korea’s closest ally.
The silence is understandable, because Kwangju represents U.S. foreign policy at its worst. The uprising created the most severe crisis in U.S.-Korean relations since the Korean War ended in 1953 and was the largest challenge ever to the US-backed South Korean military, which had effectively controlled the country since 1961 and had fought alongside U.S. forces in Vietnam. Yet the U.S. administration of President Jimmy Carter, despite its public commitment to human rights and its vocal criticism of Korea’s authoritarian government, chose the wrong side and supported that government’s decision to put the rebellion down with lethal force.

Conversations with Nepal’s Young Female Revolutionaries

In the aftermath of the Maoist-called ´indefinite´ strike which ended up lasting for the entirety of six days, many contentious issues with regards to the roots of the party´s supports were raised. While the party leadership, namely the Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal claimed that the urban population of Kathmandu was branding the supporters a variety of things, and while the media itself indeed played a role in this portrayal; the supporters in the streets did not comprise of solely uneducated and rural masses that flooded into Kathmandu for the strike.
A major support base for the Maoists during the rallies, and still standing in their support are a large number of students whether they be from Tribhuvan University (TU), its affiliated campuses or even some from private colleges. Students have been a backbone of Maoist´s support for quite some time.
When speaking to a group of young and intelligent female students at TU, it became apparent that these young voices had not an inkling of doubt or speculation in their beliefs and their faith in the Maoist party and its leadership. They had a justified view of Nepal´s past, the injustices faced by its people, and solid reasons for being a part of the ´revolutionary´ party of Nepal.

Once again Kansas Senator Sam Brownback investigated by Congressional Ethics

Another Kansas Republican is under investigation for ethics violations. He may be running for governor of Kansas, but Senator Sam Brownback, Republican, is being investigated by the Office of Congressional Ethics for possibly receiving an improper gift in the form of below-market rent during his stay in the C-Street House.
The C-Street House is already a controversy in itself. It is infamous for being headquarters to an ultra-secret society of high powered politicians calling themselves “The Family”. C-Street recently made national news for its use of Congressional interns as servants and its relationship to admitted adulterers Senator John Ensign, Republican from Nevada and South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford, Republican.

The Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington - CREW for short - cites news reports that say House members and some senators have paid below-market rents to live in a house on C Street SE that is owned by a Christian prayer group known as the Fellowship. CREW wants the House and Senate ethics committees to determine whether the monthly rent, reported to be around $950, is below the market value. If so, CREW says, the discount could amount to an illegal gift.

Other Kansas politicians have also stayed there including Todd Tiahrt who gave examples of men who he believed understood the way power should be wielded, (Adolf ) Hitler, Pol Pot, Osama bin Laden and (VI)Lenin. Also Brownback has been called into question over his relationship with Lou Engle, a homophobic extremist who in 1999 applauded Uganda’s President Yowerie Museveni when he declared that Uganda’s homosexuals should be rounded up and imprisoned. Engle is the founder of TheCall and he is known for his antigay, sexual purity obsessed mass prayer rallies.
Once again we see the moral bankruptcy of the Republican Party and their hypocritical “family values.”

Rain didn’t stop Gay Pride Parade in Wichita Kansas

Despite the threat of rain, the turnout was high for Wichita’s annual Gay Pride Parade held yesterday. Early in the day, planners considered cancelling the parade as heavy rains poured down on the city. But the rain ended just in time for the event to take place.
Once again, gay people from all walks of life showed up to prove they are not going to cower in the closet as the Christian-right-wing and other bigoted political forces would like them to do. There were also straight supporters, both as individuals and organizations that also took part in the parade such as the Peace and Social Justice Center and the Kansas Equality Coalition.
There were 19 floats. One had men in swimming suits dancing to music in wading pools. Some women went on roller skates and carried signs that read "Don't Hate Roller Skate." Many people carried simple signs for equality.
Some people carried the Rainbow flag, but some also carried US and Kansas flags. Some marchers had flags that combined both the US and the Rainbow flag.
The Wichita Eagle reported the event brought out several hundred people.
The parade ended at the Mid-America All-Indian Center, where there were about 30 booths representing several progressive organizations. Last year’s parade ended at Naftzger Park.
“We had fun at the Peace Center table at Pride on Sunday,” said Diane Wahto. “We sold buttons, bumper stickers, and shirts and talked to many, many interesting people. What a wonderful event. Thanks to all who helped.”

Joan Hinton, worked on Manhattan Project and became devoted Mao follower, dies at 88

An important American leftist figure, Joan Hinton (Chinese 寒春), Has died. Hinton was one of the scientists who Manhattan Project to build an atomic bomb during World War II. Shortly after that she moved to China then and spent the rest of her life as a devoted follower of Mao Zedong.

According to The Washington Post:

In 1948, Ms. Hinton took the dramatic step of following her brother to China just as the country was in the throes of the Communist revolution led by Mao. Ms. Hinton, who witnessed the first atomic bomb explosion in 1945, was upset when nuclear energy was used to annihilate much of the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki during the waning days of World War II. She renounced the violent use of atomic energy and moved to China, where she thought an ideal socialist state would emerge based on Mao's teachings…
During the red-baiting era of the 1950s, Ms. Hinton was condemned in overheated magazine articles as a "a blond traitor," a "Cold War Mata Hari" and a "femme fatale with a vengeance" who divulged atomic secrets to the Chinese.
She laughed off the accusations as preposterous.
"What a silly fuss," she told The Washington Post in 1978. "When I arrived in the liberated area of China, they had nothing. We scoured the battlefields for old metal to make cooking pots. The last thing in anybody's mind was the development of an atom bomb."

She Scoffed at the accusations that Mao was a mass murderer who killed tens of millions of people. She also rejected the horror stories and propaganda against the Cultural Revolution (文革).

"I was 100 percent behind everything that happened in the Cultural Revolution," she said in 2008, long after most Chinese people had abandoned Maoist beliefs. "He was a terrific person, and he liberated all the people -- he was not a monster at all." ….
She said she never regretted her move to China, saying in a 2002 interview with NPR:
"I've taken part in two of the greatest things of the 20th century -- the development of the atom bomb and the Chinese revolution. Who could ask for anything more than that?"

Although it was nice of The Washington Post to print this article on Hinton and it was a good article overall, it still shows how much this country hangs on to the old Cold War rhetoric. For example, the article said:

Nonetheless, Ms. Hinton remained an ardent supporter of Mao, the Chinese Communist leader who controlled the country from 1949 until he died in 1976. Even after Mao's Cultural Revolution reshaped Chinese society by force, leaving tens of millions of people dead in ideological purges, Ms. Hinton's loyalty was undiminished.

There’s no evidence that tens of millions of millions of people dead during the Cultural Revolution. The US mainstream press continues to print these gross exaggerations as though they were facts, even though there are many people dispute such non-sense. The press continues to repeat the old Cold War propaganda that portray Mao as a mass murderer who randomly killed millions of people for no reason. Yet most people in Asia just don’t buy this. Even today in non-Maoist China, Mao is regarded as the founder of the republic and gets the same respect that George Washington gets. There have also been articles that show that many people in China still believe that Mao and other communist officials were honest politicians. If the Chinese did believe he was such a murderer it is unlikely that there would be so many souvenir shops selling plates with Mao’s picture, Mao badges and other paraphernalia from China’s Maoist years.

The removal of panroles on the railway track near Jhargram in West Bengal leading to the accident of Kurla-bound Jnaneswari Express and consequent deaths of 150 innocent civilians and injuries to over 200 passengers is highly condemnable. The CC, CPI(Maoist), expresses its deep sorrow at the tragic incident and shares the suffering and pain of the families of the deceased. Strangely, the tragic incident which took place on the intervening night of May 28/29 is being used by West Bengal government, the police and some ruling class parties like the Hindu fascist BJP and the social fascist CPI(M) to tarnish the image of our Party—CPI(Maoist)— and gain legitimacy to the counter-revolutiona ry war unleashed by the Indian State against the poorest sections of the Indian society led by the Maoists.

Baseless accusations against the Maoist revolutionaries are part of the dirty disinformation campaign let loose by the reactionary rulers through their police-intelligence agencies and their pet media. For two days after the incident the police did not even confirm whether a blast had occurred at the site let alone finding any clue about the involvement of the Maoists or the PCAPA. However, they came up with the theory of Maoist involvement with the argument that the area is a hotbed of the Maoists, and Maoists had been targeting trains for some time. The entire media has been playing to the tune of the conspirators by running banner headlines that "Maoist terrorists" had taken the lives of innocent people, Maoists are blood-thirsty hounds and such trash which only insane people can say. Would anyone in his senses ever imagine that the CPI(Maoist), which had been fighting for land, livelihood and liberation of the people for over four decades, which had sacrificed thousands of its leaders and cadres for the cause of the oppressed, which has no other interests than the interests of the people, can harm the lives of those very people?

It is the reactionary rulers who would stop at nothing to acquire power and retain it. They would set fire to their own houses to discredit others and gain the sympathy of the people. It is universally known how Hindu fascists like Narendra Modi had engaged VHP, RSS and Bajrang Dal hoodlums to unleash attacks on Muslims; how a Sri Ram Sene is hired to create riots in Karnataka; how a Raman Singh kills adivasis and accuses the Maoists of having committed the crimes. A fascist Hitler had set fire to the Reichstag, to put the blame on the Communists and begin a witch-hunt. Likewise, these reactionary rulers themselves had organized the sabotage of railways with the aim of discrediting the Maoists. With an eye on the elections and unnerved by their fast-eroding social base, the social fascists think they can gain sympathy through such dirty tricks. The reactionary ruling class parties have degenerated to such a low level that they will go to any extent to be in power.

Strange is the manner in which most of the media had reported on the tragic incident. While they ran headlines attributing the cause of the sabotage to the Maoists, they report in their columns that the enquiry is on and that Maoist involvement is suspected. How can the media deliver its judgement even before any evidence is found or enquiry conducted? What morality do these reporters, some of them quite renowned at that, possess when they pass judgements based on their own ideological biases? Worse, some media sources have not even published or aired the statement issued by our Party representative in West Bengal denying our involvement. The media is becoming increasingly anarchic, irresponsible and unaccountable. While propagating falsehoods without investigation, the media does not even have the courtesy to admit its gross mistakes and irresponsible accusations when the truth comes out in the open. It had done the same kind of false propaganda against the Muslim community after the blasts in Mecca Masjid in Hyderabad, Ajmer Dargah blast, Goa blast and so on and remained unapologetic about its false and biased reporting even after it was clearly proved that these blasts were the handiwork of Hindu fascist gangs.

The CC, CPI(Maoist), condemns this kangaroo trial by the media and its irresponsible accusations against our Party's involvement in the train tragedy. We consider this as a deep conspiracy by the rulers to defame the Maoist revolutionaries and gain legitimacy to their suppression campaign. We warn the reactionaries who have been vomiting venom against Maoists to stop their vicious campaign and hurling false allegations. We call upon the democratic and progressive forces, civil rights groups and people at large to see through the intrigues and diabolic designs of the reactionary rulers in spreading such lies and falsehoods against the Maoist revolutionaries. AMY GOODMAN: The US military has confirmed the authenticity of newly released video showing US forces indiscriminately firing on Iraqi civilians. On Monday, the website WikiLeaks.org posted footage taken from a US military helicopter in July 2007 as it killed twelve people and wounded two children.
The voices on the tape appear to believe their targets are carrying weapons, but the footage unmistakably shows some of the victims holding camera equipment. The dead included two employees of the Reuters news agency, photographer Namir Noor-Eldeen and driver Saeed Chmagh.
The Pentagon has never publicly released the footage and has previously cleared those involved of wrongdoing. WikiLeaks says it managed to de-encrypt the tape after receiving it from a confidential source inside the military who wanted the story to be known.
In a moment, we’re going to hear from WikiLeaks co-founder Julian Assange, who oversaw the video’s release. But first we turn to the footage itself. For our television audiences, some may find these images disturbing. This clip captures the moments leading up to when US forces first opened fire.

In Kansas, our primary is not until August. But the political ads are popping up everywhere. The amazing this is how much they all sound alike:
“I’m the pro-life pro-family candidate.” “I’m a leading conservative in the senate (or house).” “Congress is out of touch with the American people.” “I plan to take back our government.”
So who isn’t all of those things? Nothing they have said is new. They all claim to be open to new ideas. Yet they campaign on old ideas. And who are they taking the government back for?
A lot of people are already getting sick of seeing Wink Hartman campaign TV Ads. The ads run every hour on most TV stations, Hartman tries hard to look like a serious business leader who is “just like you” and wants common sense solutions to the problems in Washington. “I’m not a career politician,” he said in a recent ad.Some simple questions come to mind with this guy immediately. How many of us have an arena named after us? Hartman does. Were is all that money coming from for all of those ads? The TV is saturated with them and they are not cheap. If he is against spending money so much, why is he spending an exorbitant amount for these ads? If he’s not a career politician why is he paying more in advertising than this job will pay him?
These politicians just assume we are all pro-life. But at a gathered for a memorial for abortion Dr. George Tiller on Memorial Day, Kari Ann Rinker, had a lot to say in favour of legal abortions.“This is not just a choice issue,” Rinker said. “This is a medical issue, an issue of women’s safety. It is a need.”
The real wild card in all of this is the Tea Party. What do they really stand for? There members have pushed for everything from an armed insurrection to ending the department of education and ending social security. Is all of this really in the best interest of the American people?
Rep. Todd Tiahrt was the nimble brain representative of the US House to introduce Sarah Palin to a Wichita crowd a few months ago. She is known for her slogan “drill baby drill,” as a cry for deregulating the drilling of off shore oil wells. After the spill in the Gulf of Mexico, who takes such a stance serious today?

When you see Democrat Majority Leader Harry Reid standing on the Senate floor this morning congratulating his Republican challenger for the Nevada Senate seat, Sharron Angle, don't be fooled. In Sen. Reid's Machiavellian mind -- and I say that as a compliment -- he is the lion congratulating the lamb on arriving in the jungle.
It was a good day for Democrats on what’s been dubbed another “mini-Super Tuesday’ and the outcome in Nevada illustrates why. Sen. Reid can't get his re-elect numbers over 50 percent as an incumbent, power player with big campaign money, the federal budget at his hand and the White House on speed dial. His state has a big hangover from the excesses of the recession in the form of foreclosures and declines in tourism.
If Republicans had nominated a mainstream Republican with name recognition to capture independents and conservative Democrats it was game over, craps for Sen. Reid.

But can we really be so sure that a moderate will beat someone so far to the right. Sharron Angle mentioned Ronald Reagan on the TV news. She said that a candidate need not worry about being too conservative. What if she is right? Can she win? Can Democrats just expect an easy campaign? This would not be the first time the center-left has underestimated the far-right’s ability to elect the most repugnant people to office. Get rid of Social Security? This should scare the devil out of seniors who have learned to rely on such services. But the voters have voted in some strange people before and we can’t count on folks to vote what is in their interest.

The National Democratic Front of the Philippines (NDFP) condemns in the strongest terms Israel's criminal attack against the people bringing humanitarian aid in solidarity with the people in Gaza.
This attack sanctioned by the Israeli government leadership carried out by fully armed commandos in international waters in the dead of the night has resulted in the death of at least ten persons, the wounding of scores of others, the beating and maltreatment of many more, and the illegal detention of some 700 people from many varied nationalities.
Israel Premier Netanyahu's claim that the attack was in self-defense is ridiculous and totally unacceptable.
This outrageous attack is a blatant violation of international law and Israel must be condemned for committing a crime against humanity. This latest condemnable act by the Israeli state reminds the people of the world of its other hideous crimes against humanity committed against the Palestinian people, such as the Sabra and Shatila massacre of 1982, the Deir Yassin massacre of 1948, the invasion and massacre in Gaza in December 2008 and January 2009, and the blockade and siege of Gaza since 2007, among many others.
The NDFP joins the worldwide protest and condemnation of Israel for this latest crime against humanity committed against people bringing humanitarian aid in solidarity with the Palestinian people in Gaza.
The NDFP firmly supports the struggle of the Palestinian people for their inalienable right to national self-determination, the right of the uprooted and displaced Palestinians to return to their homeland, and their other fundamental human and democratic rights.
The NDFP likewise condemns the US government for giving billions of dollars yearly in military aid to Israel, blocking numerous UN Security Council resolutions condemning Israel's gross violations of international law and the human rights of the Palestinian and other Arab peoples. US imperialism colludes with the Israel government in committing crimes against humanity and providing the Israel state with political and diplomatic protection.The continuing struggle of the Palestinian people and the resistance of the people of the world against Israeli and US imperialist aggression, fueled by the people's wrath against the inhuman and criminal attack against the bearers of humanitarian aid, are bound to grow stronger in the coming years

Wichita needs a to revitalize its down town

The Wichita Eagle ran a story on ideas that Wichita could use to improve the city’s downtown. Now if the ideas don’t fall on deaf ears it may be a first.
Wichita has a habit of doing the obvious and doing it for business interest only, often just listening to the land developers and doing what they want. And the developers just want to build on the edges of the city and make a quick buck before the mega malls and strip-malls of today, become the Twinlakes and Towne Wests of yester year. In other words the shops and new homes develop around the edge of the city and the middle sinks in and decays.
Downtown, Wichita, which once housed a Rector Book Store, Macy’s and others, is now littered with empty shop buildings and tall building that hold only a few offices. Gone are the food courts and dining areas. They are now out at the new part of town, near New Market Square. .

The Wichita Eagle looked at Oklahoma City; Boise, Idaho; Baton Rouge, La.; and Milwaukee for a look at how those towns revitalized their downtown areas.
All these new ideas take money--YOU’RE money. So that means finding a way for the taxpayer to pay for it. Some possibilities are sales taxes, bond issues, state funding, and public-private partnerships.
Some ideas from Oklahoma City included Bricktown, which is a lot like Wichita’s Old Town development; a new Ballpark, similar to the new Intrust Bank Arena that we put in Wichita; a renovated Myriad convention center; and a new library. They also managed to get new businesses downtown. Other towns listed by The Eagle brought in good restaurants to replace shabby bars, of which, Wichita doesn’t even have many of those.
So it is time for Wichita City leaders to put on their thinking caps and try some new ideas. That may give them a headache at first, but the people of Wichita would love to make use of their downtown again. And we don’t need a gaudy canal water way as they have in San Antonio Texas. We just need nice clean attractive businesses.

‘Betrayed’ Maoists to resume street war

KATHMANDU, JUN 03 - The Uunited Communist Party Nepal (Maoist) on Thursday concluded that the ruling Nepali Congress and the Communist Party Nepal (Unified Marxist Leninist) betrayed the party by not implementing the “unwritten agreement” and the May 28 three-point deal. The party also decided to intensify protests against the government.In a meeting of the Standing Committee of the party, the Maoists decided to come up with protest programmes if the prime minister does not quit “immediately,” according to a party source.The main opposition, which has been saying that Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal and senior leaders of the ruling parties have agreed to form a new unity government within five days of signing of the three-point deal on May 28, is miffed at the ruling parties.“NC and UML betrayed our party by not implementing the three-point deal, which was supposed to be a beginning of consensual politics,” Maoist Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal said in a press release issued after the SC meeting.A source close to the party said Maoist leaders will attend high-level meetings just for the sake of participating in meetings. “The NC and the UML do not want to make headway,” a standing committee member told the Post.In the statement, Dahal termed the NC and UML “activities” as “political dishonesty” and “immorality in its crudest form”.“They demonstrated utmost political dishonesty and immorality by misinterpreting the last-minute deal and verbal agreement we had struck before extending the CA tenure,” the statement added.Flaying the government and the ruling parties, Dahal said they have no more desire, but to end the statute writing and peace processes. “Their recent remarks against the three-point deal have proved they are not sincere in accomplishing the historic task of writing a new statue,” the release said.

The imbalance of utilizations was automatically accrued there due to the allotment and work divisions of the men into productive and non-productive forces. It means the side effect was shown its result on the whole system of the society in which they were to over come it without going back to the original phase of their journey. The result of the emergence of the two fields from varying each from its own origin were moving its own way from many hurdles in their long run. In every field at the dwelling centers from where the origin of finding the irrigation, domestication of animals, cultivation, planting and other fields were emerged within its own set of laws . The non-productive field had been reduced to the broadened responsibilities of keeping unifying members by avoiding a clashes at the women, at the work of guarding the food storage, and at the selecting the men to all other works within the society that kind of attraction from both sides of productive and non productive fields were made them to kill with the support of the others who were mostly entrusted to the most key centers of the society. By formulating the developments in the society, I do not like to lead it towards the principle of the fittest was survived . But I like to say the fittest system was survived and made to continue from that ancient time to the present modern times. All these developments were taken place at the African jungles and at the surrounding places of the Egyptians, and Sumerians dwelling centers. I am not talking about the developments that also were taken place at the Indian subcontinent. Because Indian and its south Asian history does not consist all transitional periods as claimed by the world Marists and Indian Marxist in India . In my earlier article I explained the system of slavery which was jumped out to the feudal system without passing the phase of the slave system.
Here the entire Marxist believes that the interpretation of the history through the phases were the same and India also has such history and they tries to apply the other model of proposition to India and its historical developments. It was the different story about the Indian transitional period which was and is quite opposite to the Marxist interpretations in its philosophy. The responsibility of the coordination of the many diversifying needs and its filling-ups with men was stood to the top of the position like a post at that time. In its true sense it is the name of ‘state’. It was in its responsibility to lead the society into the further advancement based on the coming new and newest challenges in the hands of the coordinator. The non-productive fields such as protecting the society, guarding the storages, food preparations at the society, and the responsibility of feeding the children and women who were allowed to be at the wishes of the head of the society.
As these developments were taking place at the society, the inventions and findings were lead them towards progress and advancements, such as developing irrigation channels, tiles, metal equipments, in plowing, and other inventions were taken place in the same way. Simply, this kind of historical interpretation from the point of materialistic way what I like to assess the past to understand the present conditions of the world in its exact manner without committing bias against the whole history of man kind.
At the same time, from the past to the another form of social system which was known by all those who have a political knowledge or any political affiliations in interpreting the past and remote developments in the history which had the role to play the same role in further developing the society from one phase to another.
The known history, through the available sources at present could be broadly said that the inventions from the first book bible, which states that there was slavery and it, had social sanctions at that time when the bible was written. And many more evidences are available to claim that the slave system was come into being without knowing its prior system which had lead to its advanced system at that time. Aristotle, in his writings, and in Greek philosophy the slave system as a legalized system was existed. And they supported while their life times. Before going into depth on the subject of the slavery, it is necessary to inquire the leading and the most striking features on the society upon which the entire system was and is based and on the stable process of progress any society could emerge as a powerful and resourceful of the time in the interest of the people.
To identify the exact factors of the society with its features which lead it from stage to stage on each and every findings and innovations, every factor behind every invention, which are discussed here below
there must be a need to which the people was in relentlessly trying and bearing the losses on unsuccessful attempts like a factor, if we take as example, the people did not know about the swimming, they needed to learn the swimming and built a ferries or logs they used to cross the rivers, which was the new for the new people and the old were drowned
The code of Manu, which had a section in the list of punishments on proof of guilt by throwing him into water because the reason at that time the people did not learn swimming. So that the section of punishment of throwing the guilt into water was the reason they were in belief that the guilt did not swim out of the waters. The sensing of the need should come out of skilled, cleverish and personal emotions, while resuming the responsibilities in the entrusted fields irrespective of the productive and non-productive sections .
In every filed, the lead role played by active people who may be even one or two as an indicators of such need as an essentiality while discharging their works.
Those men who were engaged in their respective works were in feeling that all were doing the work with equal responsibility under the single command or force on one or few with their help in discharging their works
An organizational vacuum was come with the differences between the two major sections of that society besides its own and internal differences among the newly emerged sections through the skilled works of the capabilities which were the basic and primary need at that time to take birth another section from its own that lead one stage of advancement and progress to another.
The clear cut demarcation between the productive and non productive sections were taken place within which every advancement and progress taken place within its own spectrum of each field beside its major fields of productive and non-productive.
In the similar way of the developments in the productive side with its extended braches now we all are evident about its existence in present time in all societies from the right from beginning, at least three major braches through which all fields of the present day of progress and advancement of the societies we should note which are named as follows.
As a major section in the society, the productive field from its ancient origin to present that feeds the whole society with its all extended branches of the present society in all over the world. The transition of the phase of the society from one stage to another stage in each country was and is very different from each other. No common model of Marxist philosophy, or its extended Leninism, in U.S.S.R, and the last model of Maoism could never be applied to the other parts of the world. To understand this particularity principle from the principle of generality which was I previously discussed in my another article, some two three months back, to all the states in the world may need many more decades or centuries, I do not expect, because the philosophy is such that would never allow anybody to review the past of its possible applications to the global countries
. The whole philosophy and a thought to state any ideas or a set of ideas by somebody, though, it may be in a materialistic form, against idealism, and utopian way of presenting the ideas about the people ,society, state, and other important things with were and are proved that as a facts and the same were and are proved correct through its reasonable and in rational way in the interest of the society, nation and for the people who lives in the society by entrusting the general responsibility of their protection as their first priority and prioritized nature in the set of other natures of the human beings whose nature and mind to calculate in every time hundreds of theories were and are come up but could not succeed to present the human nature and their behaviors would be such in the when they face such conditions in particular time and place with the particular factors that cause them to come up with their decisions, the only philosophy in the world on the serious observations on the change of the nature through the industries in the industrial revolution and its consequences with progress and developments it was formulated by the great philosopher Karl Marx and Engel. Both saw the results and they represented the whole theory and their philosophy in their literature which had given the two models of Marxian states in the world. The other was and it’s some level of progress in gauging the minds of the people in achieving their task of the removal of the monarchy in Nepal . Hence these models are known that all were and are the direct contributions of Karl Marx, Engel, Lenin, Stalin, Mao, how many lives were behind the success of these two states, and what were the factors really played in that socialist system of the governance have been told by many more than the Indians. But the British and American universities were allowed to carry out research works more on Marxian philosophies than any other subjects of social sciences.
In India there is more working groups on these philosophies are working than the findings the philosophical contributions to the social science from the side of Marxian philosophy in India . Coming back to other section of the society which relates completely to non-productive sections whatever we have in present day that had their origin in the ancient
As a part of the society, the non-productive filed which did not share in the productive work of the society. And it is completely depended upon the productive field of the society. Since the say of alienation of this diction from participation of the productive work, it has been played a lead role in development and progress of the society as a whole but through it’s extended and sub-sections of its major field. It has no power in the direct way of interfering in the affairs of the productive works and its relations within its own sub-sections of the branches.
In its apex seat, the state what we call to the chief of the non-productive sections of its own, from post of the president to the least and lower post of contract labor of the local bodies, all does not participate in the production works in the society. But all those who belong to the border security force personnel to India ’s telecom company’s night watchman lives like members of the same society from the days of alienation from the participation in productive works.
As an unavoidable need was its emergence in ancient period and from that period to till now they have been diversified and extended its roots to every branch of the government in present society by resuming the responsibilities of their respective fields. In other words, if we say correctly all the major sections of executive, legislative and judiciary all of its related branches and other sections of the society like press/media, education, entertainment, etc.
All those who do not have the direct participation in the productive field, were and are known that they are non-productive and dependents of the productive forces. And it was not easy at the time of its emergence and growth, but now it has become easy to work. So that most of the members of the society seeks these fields. And the productive field which was and is the base of all members of any society from ancient societies to the present modern societies. I go on about it later, but coming to another important section of the society which was and is the key in fastening the pace of the progress and development of the society. It is still in the hands of the people who play multiple roles in the society both in two to three fields of the society.
Productive tools, which were and are the key players in the society from ancient times to the present day of every progress and development of the society and played a predominant role in all times since the ancient days to present day. From the period of stone tools to the nuclear weapons, the growth and origin of the tools and equipments were used in the production fields for feeding the whole society at that time.
And now its peak stage of industries which are now producing the products for the benefit of its owners has a different story that may be detailed some time later. But the role of the productive tools which were used in feeding to fighting against the enemies has the same origin and its developments from that time to present period especially after the industrial revolution. But all these are in whose hands have another story to discuss in another article. One tool of iron on the development in this field, by finding the iron for hunting the animals, had been made useful in plowing the land in the Sumerian civilization, iron use was made in the transport of a carts as a development and contribution for another invention by using it for digging water storages on finding the scarcity of it in summer times. At the same way all these developments in the filed of tools taken place for the list of serializing such finding are not possible to discuss here.
