Peru- The Communist Party of the Philippines and Communist Party of Peru defend Chairman Gonzalo against the abuse of a corrupt legal and political system

If there is one thing missing from the so called "democracy" in Peru it is fairness. The government there has been dominated by right-wing leaders who have tried to white-wash the history of the Maoist rebellion that took place in the 1980s though 1992. There have been efforts to criminalize anyone who tries to present the history of that period as being anything other than "Maoist criminals/terrorists killing innocent people in an effort to destroy democracy." And by democracy they mean government of right-wing capitalists.
This so called "democracy" was interrupted by a coup, conducted by Peru's former president and self appointed dictator Alberto Fujimori.
According to Reuters;

"Fujimori was sentenced to 25 years in prison for ordering death squads to kill civilians in a counterinsurgency campaign, but was pardoned last year by former president Pedro Pablo Kuczynski, who resigned in scandal in March."

What the government refuses to address are the great inequalities and grinding poverty of Peru. No government in modern times has ever tried to end the neglect of the country's rural poor. Only during the civil war against the Maoist did any leaders ever spend any time trying to fix Peru's problems. And after the capture of Chairman Gonzalo (Abimael Guzmán) the government saw no reason to spend anymore time trying to end poverty.
Apparently suspending democracy to win a war with Maoist guerrillas is not a crime, but launching a war to empower Peru's poor is a major crime.

Even though Gonzalo has been held for more than 25 years and is presently serving a life sentence, he has recently been sentenced to another life sentence for allegedly taking part in a car bombing. Gonzalo has denied taking part in the bombing, claiming that low level guerrillas did that without telling him. It doesn't seem likely that Gonzalo had a real trial. In most countries there would be little likely hood he would be found guilty of this one incident. But Peru's government never tires of finding new ways to try and humiliate a man who's movement nearly toppled their government.
According to a statement by the Communist Party of the Philippines and Communist Party of Peru (known in the mainstream capitalist press as Shining Path):
